WESTERN INTEGRATED NETWORKS RAISES $830 MILLION FOR DEPLOYMENT OF FTTH
Western Integrated Networks, a start-up carrier focusing on local access networks, raised $830 million from prominent investors in a second round of equity financing.  The company is planning residential broadband networks featuring fiber-to-the-home (FTTH).  Target markets are Tier I/Tier II cities in the western and southwestern US.  Western Integrated Networks said it intends to offer a dedicated optical link to every home.  Investors include J.P. Morgan, Madison Dearborn, Columbia Capital, First Union Capital and others.  The company is based in Denver, Colorado.

VERIZON REACHES 221,000 DSL CUSTOMERS
As of June 30, Verizon Communications had 221,000 DSL subscribers, up 47% from the end of Q2.  The company's data revenue growth currently exceeds 30%.  http://www.verizon.com/

  • Verizon was formed through the recent merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE.  At the end of March, GTE reported 88,000 DSL subscribers and Bell Atlantic claimed 60,000.

ROADRUNNER CABLE MODEM SERVICE REACHES 912,000

COPPERCOM SECURES $90 MILLION IN FIFTH ROUND VENTURE FINANCING
CopperCom raised an additional $90 million in its fifth round of financing, bringing its total funding to nearly $155 million since 1997.  CopperCom is developing voice over broadband products supporting up to 24 voice lines simultaneously over a single, copper wire. The new funding round was jointly led by Technology Crossover Ventures (TCV) and Charter Growth Capital (CGC).

ALLIANCE FIBER OPTIC NETS $27 MILLION IN NEW VENTURE FUNDING

DIGITAL MICROWAVE BECOMES STRATEX NETWORKS
Digital Microwave Corporation, a supplier of broadband wireless access equipment, will change its name to DMC Stratex Networks.  The company's Altium radio product line operate in the frequency bands of 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 18 23, 26, 28, 31 and 38 GHz.
