CONEXANT
SYSTEMS TO ACQUIRE NETPLANE SYSTEMS, COMBINING MERCHANT SILICON
& SOFTWARE
Conexant Systems will
acquire privately held NetPlane Systems (formerly Harris &
Jeffries), a developer of core communications software, for
approximately $140 million (2.7 million CNXT shares).
NetPlane's software performs network control and service
internetworking functions across layers two through four of the
seven-layer Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model.
Its product portfolio includes MPLS, ATM, Frame Relay and
SS7 source code solutions. The
company currently holds the leading market share in sales of Frame
Relay, ATM and MPLS source code, with sales to Tier One network
equipment suppliers as well as start-ups (over 200 customers).
Conexant Systems, which is a leading supplier of
communications silicon, said the acquisition would accelerate its
entry into the network switching business.
NetPlane is based in Dedham. MA. and has 65 employees.

NETPLANE
recently introduced an off-the-shelf GR303 software solution
for next-generation wireless, Voice over DSL Gateways,
Digital Loop Carrier, DSLAM networking products, telecomm
access equipment, telecomm switching equipment and test and
measurement tools. The
packet voice strategy will be bolstered with forthcoming
support for Q.2630, Q.2650, SIGTRAN, SIP and MEGACO
protocols. NETPLANE's
future offerings will include a carrier-class IP routing
software with IETF implementations of interior gateway
protocols, exterior gateway protocols, and a redundant
routing database to ensure maximum network availability.
The MPLS-enabled
modular IP routing software will scale from a few thousand
routes to one million routes and will leverage search
algorithms and update mechanisms that can adapt dynamically
based on the routing table size to provide optimum
performance as the table size changes.
Initial release is expected in Q4 with support for
Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) as the interior gateway
protocol and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) 4 as the exterior
gateway protocol.
CONEXANT
TO ACQUIRE ISRAEL'S NOVANET SEMICONDUCTOR FOR OC-48 SONET/SDH
Conexant Systems will
also acquire privately held Novanet Semiconductor, a fabless
designer of physical layer networking silicon, for about $120
million in stock (2.4 million CNXT shares).
Novanet develops SONET/SDH-compatible physical layer
interface devices such as framers, mappers and multiplexers with
embedded clock and data recovery (CDR) units. The ICs are based on
digital CMOS technology. The
company plans to release an OC-48 framer with integrated clock and
data recovery units by early next year and is also working on a
quad OC-3 integrated framer/CDR device and solutions for OC-192
(10 Gbps). The
company will become part of Conexant's new Network Access
Division. Conexant
said the acquisition complements its recent acquisitions of
HotRail (high-speed switch fabric and backplane channel
technology), Microcosm (optical transceivers) and Maker
Communications (network processors and software).
Novanet Semiconductor is based in Ra'anana, Israel (near
Tel Aviv).

EXCITE@HOME'S
CABLE MODEM SUBSCRIBER BASE REACHES 1.8 MILLION, UP 21%
SEQUENTIALLY
As of June 30, Excite@Home was serving 1,800,000
residential cable modem users, up 21% from approximately 1,500,000
at March 31, 2000. The
company said subscriber additions declined approximately 10% from
the first quarter of 2000, primarily as a result of a temporary
interruption in the supply of cable modems experienced by some of
its partners. Penetration
in Excite@Home's North American markets reached 6.2% of upgraded
homes, up from 3.6% a year ago and 5.7% at March 31, 2000.

AT&T
SELECTS LUCENT, SPRINGTIDE FOR FIXED WIRELESS DATA BACKBONE
AT&T's
fixed wireless division awarded a two-year, $250 million contract
to Lucent Technologies to build and maintain voice and data
networking infrastructure supporting its new "Project
Angel" fixed wireless network.
AT&T's fixed wireless network will use data service
nodes located in COs and other key POPs that will consolidate
traffic from fixed wireless base stations onto its backbone.
The data service nodes will use Lucent's AccessPoint 1000
Multiservice IP Access routers and Spring Tide Networks' IP
Service Switch 5000. The
AccessPoint routers will provide QoS bandwidth management, while
the Spring Tide switch will provide subscriber management and
value-added IP service functions as well as accounting,
provisioning and management services.
Lucent will also provide its 5ESS Switching system.
AT&T Wireless launched service in Fort Worth, Texas and
plans six additional market deployments this year.
