360NETWORKS PURSUES OPTICAL MESH ARCHITECTURE WITH SYCAMORE'S SWITCHES
360networks (formerly Worldwide Fiber Inc.) will pursue a flexible optical mesh architecture for its global network using Sycamore Networks' new SN 16000 intelligent optical switch, SN 8000 intelligent optical transport products and SILVX optical network management system.  The design would use a combination OSPF routing and MPLS signaling and Sycamore’s soft optics to route lightpaths across the network.  360networks is deploying one of the largest fiber backbones spanning North America, South America, the Atlantic and Europe.  The company initially is using the new SN 16000 optical switch to emulate a full-scale network in its corporate labs to test and manage actual traffic patterns, failure scenarios and changes in network capacity.  PCs running the Sycamore Network Operating System are being used to test the optical switches.  Once testing is completed, the contract could be valued at up to $420 million.  http://www.360networks.com

Sycamore Networks, July 7, 2000

  • Sycamore's SN 16000 Intelligent Optical Switch will employ a software-centric architecture for provisioning and restoring optical services from OC-3/STM-1 to OC-192/STM-64.  A combination of OSPF and MPLS would be used to establish optimum lightpaths based on traffic engineering requirements including, but not limited to, available bandwidth, grooming resources down to STS-1 granularity, and protection requirements.  Restoration capabilities are provided using a unique nested protection hierarchy by which network operators would assign protection levels to each customer and manage protection as a service asset.  360networks will be the first to deploy the product.

  • 360networks has previously announced major fiber swaps with KPNQwest, Telia, and Carrier1 GmbH.  The company is also building the terabit capacity "Hibernia" trans-Atlantic cable linking Boston, Halifax, Dublin and Liverpool; as well as a 22,500 route km undersea cable serving the Atlantic coast of South America.  360networks is led by Greg Maffei, who previously was CFO of Microsoft.

CISCO SYSTEMS ACQUIRES NETIVERSE FOR CONTENT ACCELERATION
Cisco Systems will acquire Netiverse, a start-up developing content acceleration technology, for $210 million in stock.  The Netiverse technology will be integrated into Cisco's existing content networking solutions.  The company is based in San Jose, California and has 34 employees.

  • Netiverse's core competencies include expertise in switching, security, routing, deep packet processing, networking software and ASIC development.  No products have been announced to date.  The company is led by Gururaj Singh, who previously was with Centillion Networks (acquired by Bay Networks) and later with Berkeley Networks (acquired by FORE Systems).  Its founders also include five former members of FORE Systems. The company was funded by Sequoia Venture Capital.

  • In May, Cisco Systems announced plans to acquire ArrowPoint Communications for approximately $5.7 billion (May 4 prices).  ArrowPoint's content-aware Web switches are designed to dynamically direct specific content requests to the best site and best server at that moment.

The deal represents Cisco's 13th acquisition this year.

GTS EBONE CONNECTS 35 EUROPEAN CITES AT 2.5 GBPS
Global TeleSystems (GTS) activated its "Euro ISP" infrastructure five months ahead of schedule.  The GTS Ebone now operates at 2.5 Gbps with connections in 35 cities and 12 countries in Western Europe.  http://www.gtsgroup.com/news/news_archive/2000/europeanisp.htm
GTS, July 7, 2000

  • Last month, GTS opened a major hosting facility in London announced plans to open a second major hosting center in the city as well as a U.S. center in Northern Virginia.  GTS hosting sites are already active in Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris.  GTS currently has 17,500 route km of fiber active in Europe (with plans for 25,000 route kms) and five active city networks (with plans for a total of 16).

LUCENT EXPANDS OPTICAL PRESENCE IN CHINA
Lucent Technologies established to new companies in China to focus on optical networking.  The first, Lucent Technologies Optical Networks Co. (LTON), is a joint venture with Shanghai Posts & Telecommunications Equipment Co., Shanghai Optical Communications Development Co. and Shanghai Jiu Shi Corporation.  LTON will develop optical networking products to meet the needs of both international and Chinese markets.  The R&D center has about 300 employees and 3 main offices in Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen.

The second company, Lucent Technologies Information & Communications of Shanghai, will conduct marketing, after-sale services, project control, technical support and training for optical networking products.  http://www.lucent.com/press/0700/000707.nsa.html

  • Lucent Technologies (China) now has seven regional offices, eight joint ventures and three wholly owned companies, with more than 3,500 employees in China.

NORTEL NETWORKS LOANS $20 MILLION TO FIBERNET
FiberNet Telecom Group, a carrier's carrier serving New York City and other Tier 1 US cities, closed a $20 million private placement of 8% convertible preferred stock at a price of $10 per share with Nortel Networks.  FiberNet, which has already lit multiple strands of fiber in NYC, is currently deploying SONET rings to serve top office buildings and carrier-hotels.  Its architecture also uses SONET for the fiber-in-building network, thereby extending the redundant SONET architecture to the exact building floor where the customer resides.  FiberNet is offering connectivity at rates from DS1 to OC192, including 10/100 Mbps Ethernet circuits.   http://www.ftgx.com

  • In March, FiberNet announced a $60 million contract to deploy Nortel Networks' OPTera metro DWDM platform.

THE OFDM FORUM TARGETS ADVANCED BROADBAND WIRELESS
The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, a vendor organization dedicated to creating a global OFDM standard for high-speed wireless networks, has grown to include 40 members to date, 13 of which are listed as Principal Members.  OFDM is a modulation method that encodes and transmits data on multiple high-speed RF signals concurrently.  The technology is highly tolerant to noise and multipath interference.  http://www.ofdm-forum.com/
