TELECOM TO DEPLOY ALCATEL'S 1000 MM IN ITS ACCESS NETWORK
France Telecom
committed to connect as many as 6.5 million local access lines via
the next generation
Alcatel 1000 MM converged platform.
The Alcatel 1000 MM system, which represents the evolution
of the company's core voice switch, is a multimedia, multiservice
voice-data platform supporting traditional voice services, ISDN
and xDSL services. The
system is being developed to work in ATM and IP environments and
will serve as a key component of Alcatel's 3G mobile architecture.
Deployment schedules and financial terms were not

this week, Ericsson also announced a contract to supply its
ENGINE converged access solution to France Telecom.
FOCAL
COMMUNICATIONS, A CLEC, SECURES $300 MILLION FOR FURTHER ROLLOUTS
Focal
Communications, a CLEC with operations in 19 US cities, received
commitments for $300 million of senior secured credit facilities
from Goldman Sachs Credit Partners, L.P., Salomon Smith Barney
Inc. and Bank of America. Focal
plans to deploy services in a total of 24 markets, encompassing 56
metropolitan statistical areas nationwide.
The company recently announced plans to expand
significantly its data services business, which already account
for 71% of revenue

- Focal
Communications leases dark fiber from Level 3 Communications
and bandwidth from AT&T.
Its network uses Nortel Network's DMS-500 switch and
Fujitsu's SONET ADMs. Its
other suppliers include Carrier Access Corporation
and PairGain (now ADC).
- For
its most recent fiscal quarter, Focal reported revenue
of $45.3 million (up 74%) and or net loss of $20.8 million,
or $0.35 per share. As
of March 31, Focal had 238,697 voice access lines installed.
It expects to install at least 250,000 new access
lines during 2000.
- Focal
Communications is led by Robert Taylor (formerly with
MFS Communications), who is also Chairman of the Association
for Local Telecommunications Services, which lobbies for
legislative changes on behalf of CLECs.

CABLE
& WIRELESS TO OFFER GLOBAL WIRELESS HOSTING SERVICE
Cable
& Wireless will build a global wireless hosting service to
serve mobile operators, ISPs and dotcoms.
The new Wireless hosting services, which will be hosted in
Cable & Wireless' data centers worldwide, will be an extension
of the company's application service provision (ASP) portfolio
plans. Nokia Networks
was selected to supply infrastructure, innovative applications and
systems integration for the service.

ATLANTIC CUTS CONSUMER DSL PRICES 20% TO $39.95 / MONTH
Bell
Atlantic Internet Solutions lower pricing on its consumer DSL
service from $49.95 to $39.95 a month.
The company is charging a set-up fee of $99, covering the
DSL modem and a self-install kit.

COMPONENTS FOR MARCONI'S SMARTPHOTONIX PRODUCT
Bookham
Technology plc will supply multi-channel DWDM integrated optical
components for use in Marconi's SmartPhotonix products.
Bookham's ASOC Optical Channel Monitor (OCM) manages data
in the system real time by monitoring the power carried by each
wavelength. The
technology supports systems operating up to 40 channels.

TROPIC
NETWORKS TARGETS METRO OPTICAL SPACE
Tropic Networks, a
start-up based in Ottawa, Canada, raised C$10
million for its development of metropolitan optical networking
solutions. The company was founded in May 2000 by a core team of
network engineers and executives from Newbridge and Nortel
Networks. Investors include Celtic House and Boston's Kodiak

OPENS OPTICAL R&D CENTRE IN OTTAWA, CANADA
STMicroelectronics
acquired the in-house silicon semiconductor production operation
of Nortel Networks in Ottawa, Canada.
In addition to maintaining the front-end wafer fab
operations, STMicroelectronics will establish an optical R&D
lab dedicated to developing processes, fundamental Intellectual
Property and advanced packaging technologies.

SIEMENS
TO RESELL IP GATEWAYS FROM NX NETWORKS
Siemens
agreed to integrate Nx Networks' IP gateways into both existing
and new GSM networks. Nx
Networks offers a media gateway router that packetizes,
encrypts, and routes voice traffic over IP and ATM.
The scalable and stackable device supports multiple T1s and
E1s within a single chassis.
The company is also developing a softswitch.
