ALCATEL TO ACQUIRE INNOVATIVE FIBERS FOR ITS OPTICAL FILTERS
Alcatel will acquire Innovative Fibers, a start-up developing optical filters, for US$175 million.  Innovative Fibers produces Fiber Bragg Gratings, a passive optical component used in DWDM systems.  Its Gain Flattening Filters (GFFs) are used in terrestrial backbones.  Alcatel also offers Gain Flattening Filters (GFFs), but optimized for submarine applications.  Alcatel Optronics will market Innovative Fibers' existing standalone products and will also integrate the technology into its portfolio of optical interface and amplifier modules.  Innovative Fibers was founded in 1995 and has 220 employees.  The company is based in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.

VENDORS TEST STREAM CONTROL TRANSMISSION PROTOCOL (SCTP)
Major vendors participated in the first interoperability tests of Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP), a new IETF protocol for signaling-quality, reliable transport using IP.  The tests were held in June at Siemens' laboratories in Munich.  Participants included Alcatel, 3Com, Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel Networks, Performance Technologies (MicroLegend), Sun, Telcordia, Trillium, S-Link and Siemens.  http://www.usa.alcatel.com/press/2000press/pr070500.htm

  • SCTP is designed to transport PSTN signaling messages over IP networks, and is capable of broader applications.  The proposed protocol addresses limitations in TCP. Key features of SCTP are expected to include: acknowledged error-free non-duplicated transfer of user data; data fragmentation to conform to discovered path MTU size; sequenced delivery of user messages within multiple streams, with an option for order-of-arrival delivery of individual user messages; optional bundling of multiple user messages into a single SCTP packet; and network-level fault tolerance through supporting of multi-homing at either or both ends of an association.  More information, including current Internet drafts and a discussion mailing list, are available from the IETF "Signaling Transport" (sigtran) Working Group:  http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/sigtran-charter.html

ADC TEAMS WITH NIGHTFIRE SOFTWARE FOR DSL PROVISIONING
ADC announced a strategic alliance with NightFire Software that will combine its Singularit.e operational support system (OSS) with NightFire's SupplierExpress and CustomerExpress software.  The integrated product suite is aimed at providing DSL network operators with a quick way to provision and bill for services.  Key features would include automated service deployment and convergent customer care and billing.  http://www.nightfire.com

LUCENT TRIPLES SPEED AND DENSITY OF ITS LATEST FPGAs
Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Group unveiled its latest field-programmable gate array (FPGA) integrated circuits aimed at broadband communications.  The new FPGA technology, which more than triples the operating speed and gate density over previous generation devices, give design engineers the ability to embed field-programmable logic blocks into communications systems-on-a-chip (SoC) that are deployed as application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) or application- specific standard products (ASSPs).  FPGAs allow last-minute changes in networking standards or customer specifications.  The first ICs using the technology are expected in Q3.
