TEXAS INSTRUMENTS ACQUIRES ALANTRO FOR ITS WIRELESS LANS
Texas Instruments will acquire Alantro Communications, a start-up developing IEEE 802.11 wireless silicon, for about $300 million in stock (June 22 prices).  Alantro is working on a series of 802.11 compliant wireless LAN chips and has proposed a new specification that would double the speed of the IEEE 802.11b standard to 22 Mbps.  Alantro Communications is based in Santa Rosa, California and employs about 50 people.  TI said the acquisition would help it to extend broadband communications in the home.  Last year, TI acquired Butterfly VLSI, also developer of short distance wireless technology. http://www.ti.com/corp/docs/press/company/2000/c00032.shtml

  • Last week, TI also announced plans to acquire Burr-Brown Corporation, a leading developer of analog semiconductors, for $7.6 billion in stock.

PRODIGY ASSUMES MANAGEMENT OF SBC’S DIAL-UP AND DSL INTERNET SERVICES
Prodigy has assumed management of SBC Internet Services' (SBCIS) consumer and small business dial-up, ISDN and Basic DSL Internet Service customers.  The alliance with SBC Communications brings Prodigy’s total managed customer base to more than 2.4 million subscribers and positions Prodigy as the nation's largest retail DSL Internet service provider.  Prodigy also announced plans to relocate its corporate headquarters to Austin, Texas from White Plains, NY.  Prodigy also named Charles J. Roesslein, formerly senior vice president of SBC Communications, as president and chief executive officer, and Gregory G. Williams, formerly vice president-Wireless Systems at SBC Technology Resources Inc. (TRI), as executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO).  http://www.prodigy.com

  • At the end of March, SBC reported 301,000 DSL customers.
  • In November, SBC Communications announced plans to acquire a 43% equity stake in Prodigy Communications and designate the service its exclusive retail consumer and small business Internet access service. Prodigy also agreed to use SBC as its preferred provider of telecommunications and Internet services. 

MICROSOFT BACKS IP OVER 1394 “FIREWIRE”
Microsoft promised extensive Windows support for the IEEE 1394 interface, including Universal plug-and-play capabilities, networking with TCP/IP over 1394, and 1394 storage applications.  Windows 2000 already includes support for IEEE 1394 1394-95; 1394a; Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) 1.0; DV camcorders and other devices.   http://www.1394ta.org/

  • The current 1394 interface standard, which is supported on nearly 90% of new camcorder models, supports data transfer rates of up to 400 Mbps .  A new 1394b specification enhancement will enable speed increases to 3.2 Gbps, support distances of 100 meters on UTP-5, plastic optical fiber and glass optical fiber, and significantly reduces latency times by using arbitration pipelining.

ACCELERATED NETWORKS SOARS 219% IN IPO
Shares in Accelerated Networks (Nasdaq: ACCL) rose 219% to close at 47 7/8 on Friday’s initial public offering (IPO).  The company offered 4,000,000 shares at $15 per share.  Accelerated Networks develops multiservice access equipment using DSL, T1, NxT1, or DS3 technologies. Accelerated's also specializes in voice over DSL (VoDSL) and frame relay over DSL (FRoDSL) applications.  Its product lines include POP voice gateways, central office concentrators, and customer premises integrated access devices (IADs).  http://www.acceleratednetworks.com/

HITACHI ESTABLISHES 10 BILLION YEN INTERNATIONAL VENTURE FUND
Hitachi has established a 10 billion-yen (US$95 million) investment fund to support start-ups developing next generation Internet technologies an biotechnology.  Hitachi plans to pursue collaborative structures with other venture firms and provide its own technology, sales networks and business resources to nurture and incubate its ventures.  The company also plans spin-offs from within the company.   http://www.hitachi.co.jp/cvc/e/

VIVITY SECURE $4.5 MILLION FOR ITS ENTERPRISE VIDEO OVER IP
Vivity, a start-up based in Boulder, Colorado, secured $4.5 million in venture funding for its development of enterprise video over IP solutions.  The company’s MPEG over IP solution will deliver live or stored video and audio via corporate web servers.  Product specifics were not disclosed.  Investors include Red Rock Ventures of Palo Alto, California.  http://www.vivityinc.com/
