MICROSOFT PLANS ASP ROLE IN ITS VISION OF NEXT GENERATION INTERNET
Microsoft outlined its plans for a next generation of software and services based on the distributed computing model of the Internet.  New Web-connected products and services will rely on a set Extensible Markup Language (XML) programming tools that Microsoft will make available to application developers.  Microsoft hopes to incorporate the .NET technologies in its next generation of Windows (available in 2001) but also plans to offer versions of the Windows platform without .NET services.  Microsoft also plans to combine the .NET functionality with its own MSN online service, allowing consumers to create a "digital personality" and use smart services.  For the business market, Microsoft anticipates offering Office.NET, a future productivity and communications service renting applications on demand.  It will also significantly expand its bCentral small business portal with Outlook Web services, enhanced commerce and a new customer relationship management (CRM) service.   http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2000/Jun00/ForumUmbrellaPR.asp

DITECH TO ACQUIRE ATMOSPHERE NETWORKS FOR $88.5 MILLION
Ditech Communications will acquire Atmosphere Networks, a developer of metro optical products, for $88.5 million in stock and cash.  Atmosphere Networks offers a multi-service SONET/SDH add-drop multiplexer (ADM) that is optimized for carrying voice and data traffic in virtual path rings. The design replaces the bandwidth constraints of TDM with a thin-layer of ATM for bandwidth efficiency. Atmosphere's Full Service Node was recently enhanced with higher density T1/T3, 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, OC3 and passive WDM interfaces.  The company is based in Campbell, California.  Ditech has specialized in high-capacity echo cancellers based on DSPs.  It also offers a 4-channel WDM multiplexer and a series of EDFA modules and optical transponders.  http://www.ditechcom.com   http://www.atmospherenet.com
