ADTECH INTRODUCES CORE NETWORK MONITORING AND ANALYSIS SOLUTION
Adtech introduced a new Service Level Agreement Monitor (SLAM) system to measure service levels and guarantee performance contracts over carrier-class networks.  The active monitoring system uses Adtech’s AX/4000 Broadband Test System in the customer premise as a probe for injecting test cells into the network and then logging trip delay and other SLA parameters.  Data is gathered continuously and reported regularly to a centralized server. The SLAM monitors Layer 2 traffic sources such as ATM or Frame Relay or Layer 3, IP traffic sources.  Adtech is partnering with Quallaby to match the SLAM system with software for network management and service assurance.  Quallaby's newly released PROVISO 2.0 platform provides for distributed data collection and data import of SNMP and non-SNMP data into a centralized database.  Integrated software modules offer scalable data management, aggregation, storage, and retrieval capabilities.  Quallaby also provides a web-based portal for on-demand network reports for both customers and network operators.

LUCENT INTRODUCES HIGH CHANNEL DENSITY, MODULAR DSPs
Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Group unveiled its latest DSP product family featuring more than four times today's typical voice and data channels per chip for wireless switches, voice over IP gateways and remote access servers.  The devices are based on the StarCore architecture developed in partnership with Motorola.  StarCore DSPs use an efficient variable-length execution set (VLES) architecture model that allows up to six executable 16-bit RISC instructions, and two prefix instructions to be issued simultaneously with no alignment restrictions or space wasting NOP (No Operation) padding.  http://www.lucent.com/micro/NEWS/PRESS2000/061200a.html

SOUTHAMPTON PHOTONICS TARGETS OPTICAL COMPONENTS
Southampton Photonics, a start-up with roots in the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton, UK, attracted first-round funding of $55 million to develop optical components.  The company said its planned product range can be divided into three categories; DFB fiber laser arrays which will provide closely packed channels for DWDM and which will offer significant advantages over semiconductors lasers; optical filters with enhanced performance allowing more channels per optical fiber; and broadband optical amplifiers. Investors include Quantum Technology Partners, Amadeus Capital Partners, Interwest Partners and Sevin Rosen.

UCENT AND SIROS DEVELOP VERY SMALL APERTURE LASERS FOR DATA STORAGE
Lucent Technologies and Siros Technologies, a start-up based in San Jose, California, expanded their cooperation for commercializing Very Small Aperture Laser (VSAL) technology.  VSAL focuses light into spot sizes as small as tens of nanometers in diameter without the use of complex lens systems or more expensive short wavelength lasers.  The technology offer the capability for two-way operation as both a write and read element.  Lucent said VSAL lends itself to application in other optical and electronic devices and systems beyond those in data storage.  Siros has demonstrated the ability to write and read-back data in multiple thin layers within the depth of a single optical phase change disk.  Using the three dimensional recording technology, a DVD could hold 18 GB on a single-sided or 36 GB on a dual-sided disk – the equivalent of 6 to 9 hours of HDTV programming (current DVD-RAM recording capacity is 2.6 GB per side).
