CANOGA PERKINS EXTENDS DWDM SPECTRUM THROUGH NEW 1400NM WINDOW
Canoga Perkins introduced a Wideband Wave Division Multiplexing (WWDM) optical networking system that it claims can double the capacity of optical networks by using the 1400 nanometer (nm) region of fiber spectrum.  The technology would use Lucent Technologies' latest AllWave Fiber, which is produced using a new ultra-purifying manufacturing method that eliminates water molecules inherent in optical fiber.  Canoga Perkins' 6000 Series Wideband Wave Division Multiplexing system is based on non-cooled lasers.  It also supports traditional second (1300nm) and third (1550nm) transmission windows.  Field trials are expected this quarter.

COPPERCOM TO INTEGRATE VODSL WITH SOFTSWITCHING
CopperCom unveiled its roadmap for integrating voice over DSL (VoDSL) technology with a low-cost switching platform and service creation tools.  CopperCom's existing VoDSL platform includes a customer premises device, a GR-303 gateway that sits between a DSLAM and a Class 5 switch, and a Service Management Platform.  Through its merger with DTI Networks, CopperCom gained a circuit switch and new softswitch that were initially delivered as a Class 4 solution, providing tandem switching features, including routing, trunk hunting, billing and SS7 signaling.  CopperCom plans to transform its packet-switched gateway and circuit switch into a full function Media Gateway controlled by the softswitch communicating via the Megaco/H.248 protocol.  Class 5 calling features will also be added.  On the access side, CopperCom's Media Gateway will use AAL2 for packetized voice.  On the trunk side it will support AAL1, AAL2 and VoIP.  http://www.coppercom.com/press/access.htm

CONVERGENT NETWORKS TO ADD VODSL CAPABILITIES VIA DSP MODULES
Convergent Networks outlined plans for adding VoDSL capabilities to its Integrated Convergence Switch (ICS2000).  Specifically, Convergent Networks' ICS2000 receives ATM-based voice and data traffic originating from customer xDSL integrated access devices (IADs) via a DSLAM, and switches the voice calls to the PSTN or a broadband packet network.  The platform will employ high-performance DSP-based feature modules for touch tone digit collection and tone generation, compression and echo cancellation, as well as high-density ATM AAL2 aggregation.  The AAL2 hardware design provides support for more than 8,000 simultaneous AAL2 calls in a single shelf, and more than 100,000 AAL2 users when configured for over-subscription.   The ICS2000 offer support for loop emulation service (LES) to allow interoperability with leading xDSL IADs.  When combined with a softswitch, the platform allows carriers to deploy IADs at the customer premise to efficiently concentrate voice/data over local loops. The design provides an alternative to traditional Class 5 service delivery or specialized VoDSL gateways.  The new DSP-based feature modules are expected in Q4.  http://www.convergentnetworks.com/rel060600_vodsl.html

IPVERSE AND TOLLBRIDGE DEVELOP VOICE OVER BROADBAND
ipVerse and TollBridge Technologies agreed to integrate their technologies and cooperate in sales efforts aimed at delivering carrier class, voice over broadband systems.  The alliance will combine TollBridge's broadband to PSTN media gateway with ipVerse's multi-protocol, scalable softswitch.  The joint solution would offer next generation softswitch services and PSTN support for Class 5 switches via the GR-303 and V5.2 protocols over the same managed access network.  Laboratory trials are expected in Q3 focusing on interworking of Class 5 services with the media gateway control protocol (MGCP)-based products.   Other enhancements are expected to include session initiation protocol (SIP) and SS7 support for tandem services

NEC AMERICA TO MARKET MOCKINGBIRD'S SOFTSWITCH
NEC America signed a marketing agreement with Mockingbird Networks, a start-up developing an IP telephony SS7 softswitch based on Sun Microsystems' UltraSPARC IIi processors and the Solaris operating system. Mockingbird's NuvoStream softswitch architecture supports a SS7/C7 implementation, H.323, ISDN, R1/R2, and CAS.  The switch incorporates AudioCodes' TP-400 VoIP Communications Board, a high-density, hot-swappable, compact PCI media streaming board with a capacity of 120 independent channels, which support voice and fax streaming over IP networks.  The companies plan to match the NEC router and DWDM products for the core IP network with Mockingbird's Nuvo integrated VoIP application switches.  Mockingbird Networks is based in Cupertino, California.  http://www.mockingbirdnetworks.com
