EXCITE@HOME OPENS TO CONTENT DISTRIBUTION NETWORKS
Excite@Home agreed to provide content distribution networks (CDNs), including Akamai, iBEAM and Microcast, with direct access to its broadband network infrastructure and large base of cable modem subscribers.  The decision will allow the CDNs to deliver their broadband content directly from their own facilities or from a carrier-neutral co-location (such as Equinix) to one of the Excite@Home's Core POPs.  Excite@Home will also build its own network data centers to host content delivery providers, thereby extending its own business model. http://www.home.net/

VITESSE AND INFINEON OFFER OC-192 LINKS FOR SHORT REACH APPLICATIONS
Vitesse Semiconductor and Infineon Technologies introduced an OC-192 fiber optic link solution for Very Short Reach (VSR) applications, such as interconnects between co-located networking equipment within a CO or POP.  The VSR solution uses low-cost Infineon VCSEL-based parallel optics technology combined with a Vitesse transceiver IC that maps OC-192 SONET frames onto parallel optical links.  It supports distances of up to 300m.  The companies said their solution combines the benefits of SONET framing with an optical layer based on Gigabit Ethernet standards.  It also meets the specifications for a VSR data transmission scheme proposed by Cisco Systems in the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF).  http://www.vitesse.com

Marconi, June 1, 2000

  • Last month, Corvis announced plans to acquire Algety Telecom, a French start-up pioneering soliton optical transmission system. Solitons are specially shaped lightwave pulses that balance the effects of fiber dispersion and fiber non-linearity to allow higher bit rate transmission over longer distances than conventional systems.  Algety has demonstrated transmission of 1 terabit/second over a distance of 1000 km. Algety was founded in 1999 by a team of engineers out of CNET, the R&D arm of France Telecom.
