CIENA PLANS SMALLER OPTICAL SWITCH FOR THE NETWORK EDGE
Ciena announced plans for a network edge optical switch designed for smaller central offices (COs) in regional and metropolitan portions of service provider networks.  The new CoreDirector CI, which is based on Ciena’s existing MultiWave CoreDirector system, will support 64 OC-48/STM-16 and 16 OC-192/STM-64 optical interfaces. Like the larger CoreDirector, the CI model also supports OC-3/STM-1 and OC-12/STM-3 interfaces.  Ciena said its new platform will be able to support OC-768/STM-256 interfaces when they become available. All interfaces on the new switch will be software-definable for full wavelength switching or channelized STS-N/STM-N granularity down to STS-1 (SONET) and STM-1 (SDH).  Ciena expects to have the new switch in limited production in Q4.  http://www.ciena.com/news/archive/2000/05/05.15.2000pr.html

ACCESSLAN DEVELOPS UNIVERSAL DSL PLATFORM WITH PROGRAMMABLE PORTS
AccessLan Communications announced an innovative Universal DSL technology that will use software definable ports to DSLAM.  The company will implement the technology in a 24-port Universal DSL Line Module (ULM-24) for its existing DSLAM, as well as in a Universal DSL CPE Router (PL-220).  The "Universal DSL" technology leverages GlobeSpan's DSL chip-sets and in-house firmware to provide per-port selection of DSL flavors, including SDSL, IDSL, HDSL2, G.shdsl, and VDSL-Lite (a symmetric service at speeds of up to 6 Mbps).  The programmable ports model is a departure from the current method of deploying separate DSL line cards for each flavor in a DSLAM.  http://www.accesslan.com/

MOTOROLA INTRODUCES DOCSIS 1.1 CABLE MODEM TERMINATION SYSTEM
Motorola introduced a DOCSIS 1.1-based cable modem termination system designed to support IP telephony applications.  The CAS 2000 features a new RF matrix switch that supports a full N+1 redundant architecture. The platform consists of stackable modules (DOCSIS control, Management, IP Interface, RF switching etc) that can be duplicated for redundancy. The company claims the platform will deliver "five 9s" (99.999%) of system availability and ensure a continuous connection, even with the failure of a system component.  The system is currently in limited production.  http://www.motorola.com
