KPNQWEST
AND ALCATEL TEST 40 GBPS RATES WITH IP/DWDM
KPNQwest launched an optical transmission field trial
using multiple-channel 40 Gbps (TDM multiplexed) connections for
carrying 10 Gbps IP wavelengths.
The network uses Alcatel’s new Optinex1640 transmission
platform and Juniper Networks' M160 IP routers over a fiber route
connecting the German cities of Frankfurt and Gernsheim.
The companies said 40 Gbps trunks with multiple wavelengths
are needed in IP backbones to manage the exponential growth in
broadband traffic.

LEVEL
3 TO SUPPLY NATIONAL WAVELENGTH SERVICE TO TELIGENT
Teligent will connect its local broadband networks in 40
US markets using new Wavelength Services from Level 3
Communications. Under
the agreement, Teligent will develop seven regional network rings
using dark fiber on Level 3’s long-haul network.
In addition, Teligent will have rights to dark fiber in
Level 3's metropolitan fiber rings.
Level 3’ is currently offering its wavelength services at
either OC-48 or OC-192 rates.

MARCONI
ADDS ADSL ACCESS TO ITS FIBER
TO THE CURB PLATFORM
Marconi is adding
integrated ADSL capabilities to its existing DISC*S
fiber-to-the-curb platform, enabling service providers to push
ADSL concentration out toward the subscribers.
The DISC*S MX platform
carries broadcast analog/digital video, ATM/ADSL data, and
carrier class voice -- over a single, integrated Fiber-to-the-Curb
(FTTC) platform.
Through the use of an ONU located within 500 feet of the
customer's premise, service providers can serve up to 24 two-wire
narrowband voice drops, up to 8 Cable TV (CATV) coax drops, and up
to 12 ADSL drops. http://www.fore.com

ERICSSON
ENHANCES ITS EDGE ROUTER, CORE ATM SWITCH
Ericsson introduced high-density channelized DS-3
enhancements to its AXI 540 Edge Aggregation for terminating over
7,600 sub T1s (over 1,600 T1s).
The AXI 540 offers wire-speed routing, high-density traffic
aggregation, and advanced traffic management capabilities such as
service differentiation, VPN provisioning, and traffic
engineering. Ericsson
said its edge router could handle up to 400 routing peers and
40,000 subscribers. In addition, the router throughput scales to
over 20 Gbps/s and more than 20 million packets per second.
Ericsson
also added MPLS traffic engineering (CR-LDP) to its AXD 301 ATM
switch, as well as new DS-3 and STM-1 circuit emulation
capabilities and new OC-48/STM-16 interfaces.
