U S WEST
SIGNS LINES SHARING AGREEMENT WITH 13 CLECS
U S WEST
agreed to share copper loops for simultaneous voice and data
traffic on a region-wide basis with a consortium of 13 CLECs.
Line-sharing involves separating the frequencies of transmissions
over the copper loop, essentially enabling competitors to offer
DSL over one portion while U S WEST continues to offer traditional
POTs over the same line. The
agreement outlines the terms and conditions for competitors' use
of the high-frequency portion of the local phone line, allowing
voice and data to be transmitted simultaneously over the same
line. The
implementation schedules covers 350 COs by July.

ATHEROS
COMMUNICATIONS TARGETS 100 MBPS+ WIRELESS HOME LANS
Atheros
Communications (formerly T-Span Systems), a fabless semiconductor
start-up, announced plans to offer wireless LAN technology scaling
from low speeds to those exceeding 100 Mbps in the 5-GHz spectrum.
Atheros initially is focused on chipsets based on the IEEE
802.11a and HiperLAN II standards, but is also proposing standards
enhancements that would enable higher bandwidth, support
multimedia, and allow interoperable scalability between low-speed
and high-speed devices. Atheros’
proposal for a 5-GHz Unified Protocol (5-UPTM) supports speeds up
to 108 Mbps. The company envisions home networks powered by a
5-GHz radio, located where the broadband connection comes into the
home, communicating with TVs, PCs and cordless phones.
Atheros is based in Palo Alto, California.
