SBC COMMUNICATIONS NAMES CISCO AS PREFERRED SUPPLIER
Cisco Systems signed a multi-billion dollar agreement with SBC Communications under which it becomes SBC's preferred provider of data networking equipment for DSL, Enterprise Virtual Private Network (EVPN), Virtual Point of Presence-Dial Access Service (VPOP-DAS), Broadband Capabilities Gateway (BCG) and ATM services.  The deal also includes a series of joint research and product development activities aimed at emerging IP services.  The companies said their alliance complements SBC's Project Pronto, a $6 billion initiative to make DSL and other broadband-powered services available to 80 percent of SBC's wireline customers by 2002 and to accelerate the convergence of SBC's voice and data backbone systems into a next-generation, packet-switched platform. http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/146/pressroom/2000/apr00/sp_041900.htm

EXCITE@HOME NOW REACHES 1.5 MILLION CABLE MODEM USERS
As of March 31, Excite@Home's residential broadband subscriber base grew by approximately 350,000 net new subscribers to 1,500,000, an increase of 30% from 1,150,000 at year-end 1999.  The figure represents a penetration rate of 5.7% of the upgraded footprint, up from 4.8% last quarter and 3.1% a year ago.  Excite@Home's addressable market for cable modem service grew to approximately 26 million upgraded cable homes passed, up approximately 75% from 15 million homes a year ago. The company's @Work service had 6,200 accounts as of March 31, 2000, up from 5,100 last quarter.  Excite@Home's broadband subscribers now generate an average of more than two gigabits of traffic per second through public and private Internet peering points, with peak traffic reaching up to five gigabits per second.  The company noted that this backbone traffic represents less than half of all traffic generated by its subscribers, as the majority of broadband traffic is contained within Excite@Home's regional networks through the use of caching and distributed content feeds.  http://www.home.net/news/pr_000419_01.html

N.E.T. DEMONSTRATES ITS NEXT GENERATION BROADBAND NETWORK ARCHITECTURE
Network Equipment Technologies (N.E.T.) and France Telecom R&D demonstrated a broadband subscriber service selection architecture that uses a middleware layer to flexibly provision valued-added services over packet-based network infrastructure.  The architecture would enable a customer to set up an on-demand videoconference using a Web server and a downloaded applet to configure the parameters of the session. The server informs the middleware that a new connection with a given quality of service is required end-to-end to deliver the service requested by the customer. The middleware programs the infrastructure to build the videoconference-dedicated permanent virtual circuit (PVC) using the GSMP protocol, and the circuit is created from one end to the other end of the "enabling infrastructure."  N.E.T. recently reorganized to focus the broadband market.  The company plans to introduce its architecture at Supercomm in June.   http://www.net.com/corporate/releases/pr00/pr_france_telecom.html
