USC RESEARCHERS CLAIM BREAKTHROUGH IN OPTO-ELECTRIC MODULATORS
Researchers at the University of Southern California and the University of Washington claimed that new polymeric electro-optic modulators can achieve information-processing and bandwidth speeds as great as 10 times those of lithium niobate crystals currently used as electro-optic modulators.  The new electro-optic modulators require less than one-sixth of the power used by crystals. Potential applications include ultra-fast analog-to-digital conversion, signal transduction for cable television, directional couplers or routing switches in optical communications networks, optical switching elements in flat panel displays, modulators in phased-array radar systems and voltage sensing for the electric utility industry.  The modulators are fabricated and integrated with both silica fibers and VLSI silicon chips.  The research was funded by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the Office of Naval Research.

ADTECH INTRODUCES FIRST OC-192C IP TEST SOLUTION
Adtech introduced the first OC-192c IP test solution.  The new OC-192c Generator/Analyzer, which is part of the Adtech AX/4000 Broadband Test System, generates up to 1,020 test streams, with each stream containing billions of traffic flows.  Users can test class of service technologies, including MPLS and DiffServ, as well as create sophisticated real-time traffic distribution models with variable IP packet lengths and interarrival times.  The module also auto-identifies and analyzes incoming substreams simultaneously, based on virtually any type of IP traffic classification. In addition to providing a complete set of QoS measurements for each substream at full-rate, the analyzer will provide full-rate capture for IP error characterization and protocol decoding. OC-192c IP QoS testing can be performed in conjunction with other Adtech IP QoS test modules, which cover a variety of media types and speeds from SONET OC-3 through SONET OC-48 including POS, IP/ATM, IP/Frame Relay, Gigabit Ethernet and 10/100 Ethernet.  http://www.adtech-inc.com

ENNOVATE AND ENSIM PARTNER For Hosted Applications over IP VPNS
Ennovate Networks Inc. and Ensim Corporation announced a marketing and technology partnership targeting hosted applications over IP virtual private networks (IP VPNs).  The joint solution combines the Ennovate Envoy 1600 multi-services switch and the Ennovate EnSight Service Automation System with Ensim’s ServerXchange application hosting platform. Ensim’s ServerXchange convertes any server running Linux, Solaris or NT into multiple private servers.  These virtual servers are linked to a virtual router on the Ennovate Envoy 1600 platform.  The solution uses an IP VPN to guarantee security and application quality of service without dedicating an entire physical server to each customer.  http://www.ennovatenetworks.com/

LUMENON DEVELOPS WWDM FOR GIGABIT ETHERNET LAN/MAN/WAN
Lumenon Innovative Lightwave Technology initiated development of a new line of 1.3-micrometer Wide Wavelength Division Multiplexers (WWDM) designed for parallel physical layer Gigabit Ethernet for the LAN, MAN and WAN markets.  The company said its WWDM line would be an inexpensive, low loss, small form product to support both the installed fiber base of 62MMF and 50MMF links at 300M and 10km on SMF.

ATM VENDORS COMPLETE P-NNI INTEROPERABILITY TESTING AT EANTC IN BERLIN
Manufacturers of ATM network components and analyzers met recently in the laboratories of EANTC AG in Berlin, Germany to test the interoperability of their devices in hierarchical P-NNI ATM networks, as defined by The ATM Forum.  The tests covered three major scenarios:  routing and signaling between 3 vendors; routing and signaling in large simulated PNNI networks; and construction of large networks.  EANTC reported that significant progress has been made on interoperability since its last round of interoperability tests in December, but highlighted some problems that still need to be addressed concerning establishment of the routing channel between higher level peers.  Participants in the test included Adtech/Telcordia, Alcatel IND, Cabletron Systems, Cisco Systems, Data Connection, GN Nettest Canada, IBM Global Services ITS and Marconi/Fore Systems.  More online.   http://www.eantc.de/testing/gte/pnni/
