ALCATEL ADDS ADSL TO DIGITAL LOOP CARRIERS, EXTENDING SERVICE REACH
Alcatel introduced new ADSL line cards for its large installed base of Litespan digital loop carriers.  Carriers could use the Litespan + ADSL solution to provide DSL services to customers more than 18,000 ft from a Central Offices (CO).  Alcatel will offer the solution as an environmentally hardened mini-DSLAM package for low-density subscriber DLC situations.  Alcatel's Litespan platform is being used by every US RBOC and is a key building block in SBC's $6 billion residential broadband initiative, Project Pronto.  http://www.alcatelusa.com/press/2000press/pr040600.htm

  • Alcatel’s largest DSL accounts include Bell Atlantic, SBC (Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell and Ameritech), BellSouth, Telekom Austria, Telia, BT, Belgacom, Telefonica in Spain, France Telecom, Telecom Italia, Singapore Telecom, PT Telecom of Indonesia and others.

  • In October 1999, SBC announced "Project Pronto," a plan to invest $6 billion over the next three years to deploy DSL in approximately 1,400 central offices, to lay more than 12,000 miles of fiber, and install or upgrade 25,000 neighborhood broadband gateways.

GTE INTERNETWORKING (BBN) CHANGES NAME TO GENUITY, SPIN-OFF
GTE Internetworking, which is the former BBN Planet network, will again become an independent company, known as “Genuity.”  The spin-off will occur as a condition for the approval of the proposed merger between GTE and Bell Atlantic.  Genuity’s Internet backbone will have access to 17,000 miles of dark fiber and significant network assets.   http://www.genuity.com/

LEVEL 3 SELECTS LOGICTIER TO MANAGE HIGH TRAFFIC WEB SITES
Level 3 Communications awarded a five-year, $100-million agreement to LogicTier to manage the high-traffic Web sites of its customers.  LogicTier is a start-up founded by former Webmasters who built and managed the Internet's earliest and most active Web sites, including Netscape Netcenter, ABCNews.com, ESPN.com, USATODAY.com, washingtonpost.com and CNN.com.  LogicTier plans to build large, private-access hard-wall suites within Level 3 colocation facilities.   http://www.logictier.com/

XACCT AND CONVERGYS TO INTEGRATE IP BILLING AND CRM SYSTEMS

MIND RAISES $15 MILLION FOR IP TELEPHONY BILLING
MIND CTI, a start-up based in Israel, secured $15 million in funding for its IP telephony billing and customer care solutions.  MIND's iPhonEX Billing software integrates with major IP Telephony gateways, including: Cisco, Ericsson, Lucent, Netspeak, Nokia, VocalTec and others.   Its PhonEX Call Accounting solution, which is compatible major PBXs, records all calls to and from an organization in a customized database.  MIND's new financing was led by Summit Partners.  http://www.mindcti.com

ARTEL VIDEO SYSTEMS OFFERS VIDEO ACCESS DEMULTIPLEXER DELIVERING MPEG TO ATM
Artel Video Systems announced a packet-based MPEG video switching platform for access to ATM and IP networks.  The new Cross Stream products can accept feeds from satellite receivers, disk servers, encoders, stat-muxes, conditional access devices and trans-coders.  An integrated MPEG switching engine is capable of breaking MPTS's (Multi-Program Transport Streams) from video feeds into SPTS's (Single Program Transport Streams), allowing downstream devices to switch, multi-cast, and `jitter compensate' the video streams on a per-channel basis.  http://www.artel.com
