MRV INTRODUCES 10 GBPS TRANSCEIVERS FOR METRO NETWORKS
MRV Communications introduced 10 Gbps transceivers based on Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM) technology and designed for metropolitan area networks.  The new optical 4xtransceiver line is offered at speeds of 4x OC12, 4x Gigabit Ethernet or 4x OC48 and 1x OC-192 with distances up to 80km, 65km, and 50km respectively. The transceiver modules transmit four channels using four wavelengths in the 1.5 micrometer low loss fiber window.  Applications will include ATM switches and IP routers.  Availability is expected in Q2.  http://www.mrv.com/

AT&T BROADBAND NAMES TELLABS AS APPROVED VENDOR
Tellabs will supply its CABLESPAN 2300 Universal Telephony Distribution System to AT&T Broadband for its hybrid-fiber coax (HFC) broadband network build out.  CABLESPAN integrates IP telephony, circuit-switched voice and IP data onto a single HFC network.  Tellabs began deploying CABLESPAN in Q4 99 in the Portland, Oregon area.  http://www.tellabs.com/news/00news/nr033000.shtml

CHINA'S YUNNAN TELECOM SELECTS LUCENT'S MPLS/ATM
China's Yunnan Telecom is deploying Lucent Technologies' GX 550, CBX 500, and B-STDX 9000 switches and IP Navigator MPLS platform in a province wide network that will support eCommerce, commercial IP services, integrated network wholesale business, individual consumer IP services, VPNs, VoIP, Frame Relay and ATM services.  The core network nodes will interconnect via 2.5 Gbps optical trunks. http://www.lucent.com/press/0300/000330.nsa.html

INTEL INVESTS IN NETWORK ICE FOR DSL SECURITY
Intel signed a licensing agreement with Network ICE Corp. covering its DSL intrusion detection and personal firewall software.  Intel also made an undisclosed equity investment in the San Mateo, California based start-up.  Network ICE's software, BlackICE Defender helps DSL customers monitor, block and trace unauthorized attempts by outsiders to gain access to their personal computers.  Intel will bundle the software with its DSL modems.

SUN MICROSYSTEMS INVESTS IN XACCT
Sun Microsystems made an undisclosed equity investment in XACCT, a start-up developing IP usage based billing and mediation systems.  Total funding in XACCT now stands at $48 million.  XACCT’s multi-source, multi-layer architecture enables it to extract information from multiple network devices and from all layers of the network - from physical layer to the application layer, in real time.  The data is then synthesized or eXtensible Detail Records, similar to the Call Detail Records (CDRs) generated by telco switches.  http://www.xacct.com

WISOR TELECOM RAISES $10 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR NEXTGEN OSS
Wisor Telecom, a start-up developing Operations Support Systems (OSS), closed $10 million in its second round of venture capital funding.  Wisor Telecom provides a set of integrated software components for order management, service provisioning, inventory management, feeder route determination, Optimal Cost Provisioning(TM), and interconnection.  The Rockville, Maryland-based company is also developing next-generation, flow-through OSS technology.  Investor include Keystone Venture Capital, Boston Ventures, Riggs Capital Partners, Megunticook Management, Mid-Atlantic Venture Funds, Hickory Venture Group, and Early Stage Enterprises.

NORTEL REPORTS PROGRESS IN 3G CDMA TRIALS
Nortel Networks reported progress its 3G wireless trials, including end-to-end completion of wireless packet data sessions using cdma2000 1XRTT.  The first the first phase of cdma2000 (1XRTT), will support 144 Kbps packet data transmission and enable a doubling voice capacity.

SORRENTO NETWORKS NAMES EXECUTIVE STAFF
Sorrento Networks, a spin-off from Osicom Technologies that is targeting optical systems for interoffice and access networks, named Oren Shaffer as its president and chief operating officer and Dr. Georges Wanet as its executive vice president and president of Sorrento Networks Europe.  Shaffer most recently served as executive vice president and chief financial officer for Chicago-based Ameritech.  Wanet most recently served as a member of the Group Leadership Committee of Belgacom.  http://www.osicom.com
