JUNIPER
NETWORKS SHIPS M160 ROUTER WITH OC-192C/STM-64 INTERFACES
Juniper Networks announced commercial availability of its M160,
an Internet core router offering wire-rate routing performance for
up to 16 OC-192c/STM-64 or 64 OC-48c/STM-16 circuits.
The M160 uses new
ASICs developed specifically for handling OC-192c/STM-64,
including a SONET
Manager II ASIC
that provides SONET and SDH framing of back-to-back minimum size
packets at 10-Gb rates. Juniper
said its new core routing platform provides aggregate route lookup
rates in excess of 160 million packets per second (Mpps) and
aggregate throughput exceeding 160 Gbps.
The system architecture separates packet forwarding
functions from its routing engine, while offering performance-based
packet filtering of inbound and outbound traffic.
Juniper offer several traffic protection mechanisms for
core Internet traffic routes, including MPLS Fast Reroute for SDH
and WDM connections, Dual-router Automatic Protection Switching
for router-to-ADM circuit failures, and Virtual Router Redundancy
Protocol (VRRP) for router redundancy on a Gigabit Ethernet LAN.
Juniper's
initial M160 customers include:
- Cable
& Wireless, which
is already using the M160 at OC-192c/STM-64 between New York
and Washington D.C.
- UUNET,
which is using the M160 to upgrade its US production network
to OC-192c/STM-64. UUNET
is activating OC-192c/STM-64 circuits between Chicago, New
York, and Washington, D.C. using MPLS.
- KPNQwest,
which will deploy the M160 routers in 15 major European
cities.
- GTE
Internetworking, which
selected the M160
Router for an OC-192c/STM-64 Pilot.
GTEI's M160
routers will aggregate several OC-48/STM-16 and OC-12/STM-4
links onto GTEI's first OC-192c/STM-64 trunks.
- Japan's
National Center for Science Information Systems (NACSIS),
which will use M160 routers to move astronomical observation
data over an OC-192c fiber optic link from the radio
telescopes in Nobeyama to servers in Tokyo.
