SELECTS NORTEL'S OPTERA FOR PAN-EUROPEAN OPTICAL INFRASTRUCTURE
Metromedia
Fiber Network will use Nortel Networks' OPTera LH optical
transport equipment for its pan-European optical infrastructure
connecting 16 major cities in five European countries.
The multimillion-dollar deal follows an earlier US$250
million contract with Metromedia Fiber Network for equipment in
its North America network. Nortel
Networks will also provide Metromedia Fiber Network with program
management, network design, implementation, integration, network
surveillance, first-line maintenance, and emergency response
services.

CYBER.SOLUTIONS ADDS PERFORMANCE MONITORING TO HOSTED APPLICATION
SERVICES
Qwest
Cyber.Solutions will offer monitoring, measurement, prediction
capabilities and performance optimization for its hosted
application services using tools from BMC Software.
Qwest said the new capabilities would push the boundaries
of today's service level agreements (SLAs).

INVESTS IN SORRENTO NETWORKS, A START-UP FOR METRO OPTICAL
NETWORKING

Pan-Europe Communications (UPC) made a US $16.5 million equity
investment in Sorrento Networks, a subsidiary of Osicom
Technologies that is developing metropolitan area optical
solutions. UPC, together with chello and UnitedGlobalCom, is
forming a Venture Fund to invest in other opportunities as well.

SUPPLIES BRAZIL'S TELE CENTRO SUL WITH DSL FOR VOICE/DATA SERVICES
Brazil's
Tele Centro Sul, a consortium of Solpart and Telecom Italia,
selected Lucent's Stinger DSL concentrators for a deployment of
10,000 lines in the cities of Curitiba and Brasilia.
The Stingers will be used to deliver voice, data and

TRILLIUM'S
MGCP SOFTWARE HANDLES 23,000 MESSAGES P/S ON MEDIA GATEWAYS
Trillium Digital
Systems' new MGCP (Media Gateway Control Protocol) software
handles 23,000 messages per second on media gateway controllers
and more than 24,000
messages per second on media gateways.
MGCP is gaining acceptance in a range of Internet telephony
and broadband access products, including trunking gateways,
voice-over-ATM gateways, IP telephony gateways and residential
gateways, such as set-top boxes, xDSL devices and other cable-IP
telephony equipment. Trillium's
MGCP source code for IP telephony consists of a Gateway Control
Protocol (GCP) implementation of MGCP for both media gateways and
media gateway controllers. For media gateways, Trillium also
provides Real Time Transmission Protocol and Real Time
Transmission Control Protocol (RTP/RTCP) products. Future
additions to Trillium's IP telephony product portfolio will
include SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) for voice- over-IP,
SIGTRAN (SS7-over-IP) and MEGACO (Media Gateway Control

CIDERA
NAMES NEW CEO, RAISES $36 MILLION IN NEW FUNDING
Cidera (formerly
SkyCache) named Richard J. Hanna as its new CEO.
Hanna formerly was President of Teligent International and
had earlier led the company's domestic sales, marketing and
operations organizations. Cidera
specializes in satellite delivery of broadband content to the edge
of the Internet. Cidera
also announced the placement of $36 million in private series C
preferred stock from five investors, GE Equity, Investor AB of
Sweden, Investor Growth Capital (IGC) and Dell Computer.
The company's existing investors include Carlyle Venture
Partners, Intel, Institutional Venture Partners (IVP) and New
Enterprise Associates (NEA).
