LSI LOGIC UNVEILS NEW PROCESS TECHNOLOGY FOR COMMUNICATION CHIPS
LSI Logic introduced a flexible process technology that is more than twice as dense as its previous generation chip making technology, paving the way new classes of optical, wireless, baseband processor xDSL systems-on-a-chip designs.  LSI Logic’s Gflx technology is a 0.10-micron effective channel length (0.13-micron drawn) process technique that offers 78 million usable logic gates, equivalent to 612 million transistors on a tiny 20 by 20 millimeter silicon chip.  The process can provide up to eight layers of metallization on a single silicon chip.  LSI Logic is offering its Gflx in eight different product modules: high performance and low power transistors, 1.5V and 1.2V core libraries, mixed signal, application optimized I/O sets, metal options ranging from four-to-eight layers, embedded SRAM and embedded FGPA.  http://www.lsilogic.com/news/nwsreleases/pr0222.html

TACHION SIGNS $40 MILLION CONTRACT FOR ITS COLLAPSED CENTRAL OFFICE PLATFORM
Tachion Networks announced a deal valued at up to $40 million to supply its FUSION 5000 collapsed central office platform to Gabriel Communications, a facilities-based integrated communications provider serving 14 markets in the Midwest. Tachion’s platform integrates transport, switching, routing and signaling into a single box, significantly reducing the cost of complexity over a traditional multi-box and Class 5-based architecture.  The platform leverages a dual TDM/ATM switching matrix, allowing services to be switched in native format. The integration of SONET ATM/STM Add Drop Mux (ADM) enables direct attachment to SONET rings.  The platform also provides an integrated, wire speed IP services routing engine; enabling differentiated services and supporting MPLS, DiffServ, BGP, IS-IS, OSPF and RIP.  Gabriel has previously deployed both ATM data switches and traditional Class 5 voice switches in its networks.  Gabriel said the Tachion's Collapsed Central Office architecture would be more cost-effective, offer a smaller footprint and would facilitate a more rapid market expansion.  The company participated in Tachion’s previously announced second round financing.  http://www.tachion.com/ http://www.gabrielcom.net/

NEXT LEVEL AND PIXSTREAM ENTER VDSL PARTNERSHIP, BELL CANADA TRIAL
Next Level Communications and PixStream, a developer of video head-end solutions, entered into a partnership to provide telephone companies with equipment to offer TV services to their customers over existing copper wire networks using VDSL.  The two companies are currently working with Bell Canada on a VDSL trial to over 100 customers in a 45 story, 430-unit condominium apartment building.  PixStream’s head-end equipment is deployed in a central office to aggregate video signals from a number of sources, providing video processing and adapting the signals to the network infrastructure.  Each PixStream video networking system can redistribute more than 144 channels of video and music content.  http://www.nlc.com  http://www.pixstream.com
