INTEL TO ACQUIRE GIGA A/S FOR OC-48 AND OC-192 CHIPS
Intel will acquire GIGA A/S, a Danish company providing high-performance networking chips, for $1.25 billion in cash.  GIGA A/S is a fabless IC manufacturer offering a range of silicon devices operating at rates from 155 Mbps to 10 Gbps.  Earlier this month, GIGA introduced its 3rd generation of STM-64/OC-192 transmitters and receivers for SDH/SONET and DWDM applications.  Intel said the acquisition would enable it to supply silicon for the core of the Internet backbone.  GIGA will become a subsidiary of Intel and will report within Level One Communications as part of Intel's Network Communications Group.  http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/cn031500.htm

YIPES SIGNS $125 MILLION DARK FIBER DEAL WITH METROMEDIA
Yipes, a start-up service provider planning metropolitan Ethernet services, signed a 20-year, $125 million dark fiber lease agreement for Metromedia Fiber Network's facilities into downtown and suburban areas of Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle.  Yipes will offer Ethernet LAN-to-LAN and Internet access services, both scalable from 1 Mbps to 1 Gbps, in 1Mbps increments.  http://www.yipes.com

  • Yipes recently secured an additional $77 million in funding from Sprout Group/DLJ, Norwest Venture Partners, New Enterprise Associates, Extreme Networks, Juniper Networks, Intel and other investors.  Its network uses Extreme Networks' switches and Juniper's M40 routers at the core and Juniper’s M20 routers at the edge. 

NEXTLINK SELECTS NORTEL'S BROADBAND WIRELESS -- LARGEST HOLDER OF LMDS SPECTRUM IN THE US
NEXTLINK Communications, the largest holder of broadband wireless spectrum in the US, selected Nortel Networks' Reunion point-to-multipoint FDMA (frequency division multiple access) and TDMA (time division multiple access) solution, as well as Nortel Networks' point-to-point radios.  NEXTLINK said it plans to deploy the equipment in 25 markets across the country this year.  Financial terms were not disclosed.  http://www.nortelnetworks.com

  • Last week, NorthPoint Communications and VersaTel announced a joint venture wholesale DSL service provider for the EU market.  VersaPoint initially is targeting more than 2,000 central office co-locations in the German and Dutch markets.  The new company will launch full commercial service this summer and will operate as a wholesale service provider working closely with European content and service providers.

C-COR.NET AND FINISAR PARTNERSHIP TARGETS ETHERNET OVER HFC NETWORKS
C-COR.net and Finisar will co-develop a set of fiber optics-based products for active or passive broadband Hybrid Fiber-Coax (HFC) networks. C-COR.net is a supplier of radio frequency (RF) and advanced AM (Amplitude Modulation) fiber optic distribution electronics for two-way HFC networks.  Finisar is a provider of fiber optic subsystems and network performance test systems for extending Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel.  The jointly developed products are targeted for deployment throughout HFC networks at optical node locations, primary/secondary hub sites and primary headends for supporting services such as Fast Ethernet over the broadband network and distributed CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System) like functions.   An initial product release is scheduled for June 2000.  http://www.finisar.com   http://www.c-cor.net
