FIBER INC SIGNS KPNQWEST FIBER SWAP, ACQUIRES GLOBENET
Worldwide
Fiber Inc., which is changing its name to 360networks, will
provide multiple STM-16 channels (2.5 Gbps) on its forthcoming Hibernia
transatlantic
cable to KPNQwest. The
deal was valued at $120 million.
In return, 360networks will purchase 7,300 km of fiber
infrastructure on KPNQwest networks linking 19 cities in Europe,
including Milan, Zurich and Madrid. 360networks also
announced plans to acquire GlobeNet Communications for about $600
million in stock plans the assumption of $400 in debt.
GlobeNet is building a high capacity cable linking the US,

- Worldwide
Fiber has previously announced an agreement with
Carrier1 GmbH to purchase and potentially swap capacity on
networks in Europe and across the Atlantic.
It also has a major fiber swap deal with Telia.
Earlier this
month, Worldwide Fiber was awarded a contract to provide
PSINet with a transparent OC-48 channel between Vancouver and
Chicago. In
December, Gregory B. Maffei was named Worldwide Fiber’s new
CEO. Maffei was
most recently CFO of Microsoft.
CIELO
UNVEILS 12 GBPS VERTICAL CAVITY SURFACE EMITTING LASER
Cielo
Communications, a start-up based in Broomfield. Colorado,
announced an 850nm Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL)
operating at 12.5 Gbps over 300 meters of fiber.
The laser supports direct modulation and was packaged in a
low-cost optical subassembly.
Cielo said its shortwave VCSEL would yield a significant
cost reduction compared to current optical interface solutions at

NTT
AMERICA TO OFFER INTERNET EXCHANGE (IX) SERVICES BASED ON IPV6
NTT
Multimedia Communications Laboratories (MCL) will offer Internet
Exchange (IX) services based on IPv6 from its San Jose Data
Center. NTT MCL said
the current shortage of IPv4 addresses presents a large problem,
especially for the Wireless industry.

iBASIS
SIGNS INTERNET TELEPHONY EXCHANGE AGREEMENT WITH NTT-ME
iBasis
announced an Internet telephony service agreement with NTT-ME
(Nippon Telephone and Telegraph-Multimedia and Engineering) that
will significantly enhance iBasis' termination footprint in Japan.
Initially, NTT-ME will exchange traffic with iBasis in the
Tokyo metropolitan area and in other major cities in Japan.
iBasis claims to be the world's largest international Cisco
Powered Network for Internet telephony.

BROADSOFT
UNVEILS SERVICE CREATION PLATFORM, FORMS ALLIANCE WITH PORTAL
SOFTWARE
BroadSoft,
a start-up based in Gaithersburg, Maryland announced a service
creation and delivery architecture that leverages a Web server to
manage call waiting, voice mail, conferencing, auto-attendant and
follow-me-anywhere features.
The system is transport independent and will interoperate
with the circuit-switched PSTN,
as well as IP and ATM networks.
ITL Metro, a CLEC, will use
BroadSoft system in its existing Class 4 network as an alternative
to Class 5 switches for providing enhanced local exchange
services. BroadSoft also announced plans to integrate its
packet telephony service creation architecture with Portal
Software's customer management and billing solution.
The product alliance is aimed at combining traditional
Class 5 local exchange services and other messaging devices over
data networks. BroadSofts'
Portal's customers include US West, Qwest
Communications, Covad, Inktomi, Juno Online, T-Online, France
Telecom and Demon Interactive.

agreed to resell CopperCom's entire voice over DSL product line.
Alcatel now has nearly one and one half million lines
shipped to service providers in North America through its Alcatel

Tollbridge
Technologies, a start-up developing voice-over-broadband solutions
for next generation carriers, secured
an additional $45 million in mezzanine financing led by Meritech
Capital Partners and including TeleSoft
Partners, LSI
Logic and previous investors.
Toll Bridge's
product set consists of three elements:
an integrated access device; a carrier-grade Local Exchange
Gateway that translates packets back into voice and connects to
Class 5 switches using GR-303 and new, emerging protocols such as
the Segment Interface protocol (SIP) and Media Gateway Control
Point (MGCP); and an element management system. Separately,
Tollbridge announced GR-303 certification for its TB200 gateway
with Nortel DMS Class 5 switches.

ACQUIRES VOIP ASSETS OF INTERNET TELECOM
Terayon
acquired certain VoIP assets of Internet Telecom, a privately held
supplier of PacketCable solutions, for approximately $40 million
in stock. The acquired technologies include voice compression
algorithms, digital signal processing code, signaling protocols
for the major worldwide telephony standards, gateways to relay
voice data and signaling information, software systems to enable
communication over IP networks, and the company's Hierarchical
Internet Telephony (HIT) server to perform software-based
switching functions. The systems from Internet Telecom are planned
to adhere to PacketCable. Terayon said it plans to offer its cable
and DSL customers voice solutions based on both circuit switch and

ACQUIRES HOLLAND'S DELTAKABEL FOR CABLE TELEPHONY SYSTEM
Lucent
Technologies will acquire DeltaKabel TeleCom of the Netherlands, a
privately-held developer of cable modem and IP telephony
solutions, for an undisclosed sum.
DeltaKabel makes telephony-enabled cable modem systems for
MCNS and DVB standards. The
telephony cable system is deployed in the Netherlands by CAI
Westland, Casema and Rendo. DeltaKabel
has 15 additional cable telephony trials underway with other

NETWORKS SELECTS LUCENT SOFTSWITCH FOR DATA CALL DIVERSION
Gateway
Telecom Canada, which is planning a wholesale, multiservice
carrier network spanning major cities in the US and Canada,
awarded a $30 million contract to Lucent Technologies covering its
MAX TNT access switches, Stinger DSL access concentrators,
Internet Call Diversion (ICD) for softswitching and NavisAccess
management products. Gateway
is currently deploying the Lucent products in its own central
offices and those of ILECs. The

CROSSING INVESTS IN JATO
Global
Crossing made a $5 million equity investment in Jato
Communications and may resell Jato's business grade DSL services
in Tier II and Tier III cities across the US.
Under the deal, Global Crossing will provide Jato with
SONET private line, IP transit and Web hosting services.

LAUNCHES MMDS BROADBAND WIRELESS ACCESS SYSTEM
ADC
introduced its Axity Broadband Wireless Access System for two-way
services over Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS)
spectrum. The system
delivers up to 27 Mbps in each 6 MHz channel in the downstream in
the MDS (2.1 GHz), WCS (2.3 GHz), and MMDS (2.5 GHz) spectrum.
A single MMDS base station has 20-30 mile service radius
and deliver up to 10 megabits per second to individual users of
broadband capacity. ADC's product line includes base station
transmitters and receivers, wireless modems for the headend and
the desktop, and a full-featured Element Management System.

NETWORKS SPINS-OFF NETGEAR
Nortel
Networks established its former NETGEAR subsidiary as a separate
company focused on the small office / home office market.
In addition to its existing 10/100Mbps Ethernet hubs,
switches and adapter cards, NETGEAR offers 10 Mbps home phone line
networking kits and will shortly introduce an 11 Mbps wireless LAN
solution. The
spin-off company received a US$15 million equity financing
