TERAWAVE INTRODUCES ITS PASSIVE OPTICAL NETWORKING SOLUTION
Terawave Communications, a start-up based in Hayward, California announced a passive optical networking (PON) access system that provides a combined bi-directional transmission of 1.2 Gbps over a single strand of fiber, offers protection with less than 50 millisecond protection-switching times, and is estimated to reduce initial equipment deployment costs by 75% when compared to current SONET/SDH solutions.  Terawave, which says it is committed to the Full Service Access Network (FSAN) Consortium PON recommendations, will offer three network elements: GigaPON, VirtualPON and iWDM PON.  The GigaPON is designed switch lightpaths dynamically to meet individual service level demandsusing a patented Service Adaptive Lightpath Switching Architecture.  The technology allows any granularity of bandwidth to be statistically shared among subscribers, while guaranteeing a specified amount of bandwidth for each stream.  Terawave uses custom ASICs to make the QoS and lightpath switching decisions.  Terawave's VirtualPON technology provides Optical-Splitter-Gain functionality, allowing a single fiber strand and low cost optical splitters can now serve multiple business districts, containing over a thousand PON connections.  Terawave's iWDM PON system provides Optical-Fiber-Gain capabilities, allowing WDM channels to be added to a GigaPON facility for transporting GigE, Fiber Channel, ESCON, IP, ATM and SONET/SDH.  Whitepapers are online.  Terawave is led by Ray Lin, the former co-founder and CEO of Premisys.  http://www.terawave.com/

REDBACK NETWORKS INTEGRATES SIARA'S ASIC FOR SMARTEDGE PRODUCTS
Redback Networks completed its acquisition of Siara Systems and announced plans for a family of multi-service platforms for aggregating traffic onto metropolitan optical networks. Redback's forthcoming SmartEdge products, which handle TDM and IP-based services, use several custom ASICs to provide optical cross connects, add/drop multiplexing, and deep packet processing functionality.  A detailed product announcement is promised for Q2.  Redback Networks also named its new management team:  Dennis Barsema (formerly Redback) is CEO, Vivek Ragavan (formerly Siara) is president and chief operating officer.  http://www.redback.com
Redback Networks, March 8, 2000

  • Redback Networks offers a Subscriber Management System used to aggregate traffic from DSL, cable, and wireless service POPs onto a carrier network.  Siara Systems had previously disclosed plans for six IP/SONET ASICs, some with up to five million gates and near 80 billion instructions per second of combined processing performance.  The merger was first announced on November 29.

TIARA NETWORKS ANNOUNCES MULTI-LINK FRAME RELAY, PSINET CONTRACT
Tiara Networks, a start-up based in San Jose, California unveiled a line of aggregation switches that support the Multi-link Frame Relay (MFR) standards from the Frame Relay Forum.  Tiara's Series 7000 Frame Switch, which is designed for POPs, uses Aggregated Virtual Circuit (AVC) services to provide bandwidth access between 1.5 Mbps and 45 Mbps. Tiara's Series 1000 Multi-Megabit Access Concentrator, which serves as CPE, provides symmetric Internet access from 3 to 12 Mbps.  PSINet has selected the Tiara products to enhance its dedicated access services, including its Multi Megabit Service, which bundles up to seven T-1 lines filling the bandwidth gap between T-1 and T-3 data rates.  Financial terms were not disclosed.  http://www.tiaranetworks.com/

NEC ELUMINANT TECHNOLOGIES BEGINS PON PRODUCTION
NEC Eluminant Technologies began production of passive optical network (PON) components at its facilities in Hillsboro, Oregon.  The plant has the capability of producing 40,000 multiplexers and optical access terminals (OATs) per year.  NEC Eluminant's first product is the FiberSLAM, a passive optical network system that drives a single fiber connection. The unit can host up to 17 PON interfaces and a total of 19 slots are available to accommodate combinations of PON cards, triple DS3 cards, and OC-N cards. The FSLAM optically splits the fiber to connect up to 32 optical access terminals located on the customer premises. These terminals deliver both packet- and circuit-based services. The optical splitting is achieved by an inexpensive passive optical splitter located in the central office or in the local loop facility. http://www.eluminant.com/
