SIEMENS FORMS OPTISPHERE NETWORKS 
Siemens announced a re-organization affecting its network infrastructure, optical networking and mobile telephony operations.  Under the plan, Siemens will establish a new US company targeting optical networking.  The new subsidiary will be called Optisphere Networks Inc. and will serve the North American market. Optisphere's sales are expected to exceed €300 million (US$286 million) in its first year of operation.  Siemens will also establish a new Information and Communication Mobile (ICM) group to handle all its communications terminals (mobile and wired phones, mobile organizers and digital products) and mobile networks businesses.

  • Siemens announced the formation of Unisphere Solutions, its wholly owned US-based subsidiary, in early March 1999.  Unisphere targets converged voice/data Internet solutions.  

NU-WAVE PHOTONICS TARGETS OPTICAL COMPONENTS
Nu-Wave Photonics, a start-up based in Ottawa, Canada announced its entry into the fiber optic components business.  The company is working on a new component architecture and fabrication process for large-scale integration of complex optical circuits.  Nu-Wave said its photonic circuits will build on multi-element optical platforms to incorporate optical, electro-optical and electronic elements into hybrid subsystems.  Investors in the company include VenGrowth Investment Fund, Eastern Technology Seed Investment Fund, Bank of Montreal, Business Development Bank and Ventures West.  http://www.nu-wavephotonics.com/

IBM AND AT&T TEAM ON CORPORATE WIRELESS SERVICES
IBM will combine its software and services with AT&T's wireless IP network to provide corporate applications using existing Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) technology and next generation 3G technology.  The Third Generation network being developed by AT&T will be based on the combined TDMA/GSM global standard known as EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution).  IBM will contribute a new transcoding system that will enable corporate data to be translated into the appropriate formats for a variety of devices, including wireless phones, PDAs, and laptop computers.  http://www.att.com/press/item/0,1354,2610,00.html

IPMOBILE RAISES FUNDING FOR DIFFERENTIATED WIRELESS INTERNET PLATFORM
IPmobile, a start-up based in Dallas, Texas raised $6.5 million in first round funding for its development of equipment for differentiated wireless Internet services.  The company recently appointed Russell Davis, formerly of Alcatel, as president and chief executive officer.  IPmobile said its infrastructure products will enable wireless service providers to profitably extend wireline VPN, service guarantees, provisioned QoS, premium content delivery, VoIP, and multicasting capabilities over current cellular/PCS and fixed wireless networks.  Investors include Sevin Rosen and North Bridge Venture Partners.  http://www.ipmobile.com

CARRIER ACCESS, SOMERA, AND WESTERN MULTIPLEX SHOW WIRELESS DS3
Carrier Access Corp., Somera Communications and Western Multiplex Corp. announced a point-to-point DS3 wireless solution that uses license-free microwave radio.  The solution combines the Carrier Access Wide Bank 28 DS3 Access Multiplexer with Western Multiplex's license-free DS3 microwave radio to support 28 T1 channels per DS3 switch-port interface.

CHELLO BROADBAND TO EXPAND INTO LATIN AMERICA
chello broadband opened offices in Sao Paulo, Brazil and announced plans to extend its cable modem Internet service throughout Latin America.  The company will partner with broadband network operators across the continent. chello is current commercially active in seven countries and had 133,700 cable modem subscribers as of January 31, 2000.
