MOTOROLA TO ACQUIRE C-PORT FOR PROGRAMMABLE NETWORK PROCESSORS
Motorola will acquire C-Port Corp., a start-up developing high-end programmable network processors, for approximately $430 million in stock.  C-Port's programmable, single chip C-5 DCP processor is designed for high-function Ethernet switches, multiservice access platforms, terabit routers and optical edge switches. The processor supports any network protocol or mix of network protocols (IP, Ethernet, ATM, Frame Relay, SONET) over physical interfaces ranging from DS1 to OC-48 at full wire speed. C-Port's device offers over 3,000 MIPS of processing power and 5 Gbps of aggregate bandwidth. Multiple devices could be stacked in order to scale equipment designs to the terabit level.  In addition, the C-Port design also includes five optimized coprocessors that accelerate specialized networking tasks -- traffic classification, queue management, payload handling, fabric interfacing and supervisory processing - that are common across all applications.  C-Port is headquartered in North Andover, Mass., where it employs around 90 people.  C-Port received venture funding from Charles River Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, Benchmark Capital and Amerindo Investment Advisors.

CYOPTICS SHOWCASES 40 GBPS AND LONG-HAUL 10 GBPS OPTICAL COMPONENTS
CyOptics, a venture-backed start-up with facilities in Los Angeles and Israel, announced an Indium Phosphide semiconductor technology for use in optical components for 40 Gbps and ultra-long-haul (ULH) 10 Gbps transmission systems.  CyOptics said its patented Pulse Generating Laser (PGL) technology enables very high-speed and long-haul DWDM transmission by generating high power, short laser pulses.  The size and power drive requirements for PGL make it suitable for RZ (Return to Zero) and OTDM (Optical Time Domain Multiplexing) transmission systems.  CyOptics expects new methods of optically multiplexing data streams will make possible line speeds of 100Gbps and higher.  CyOptics is led by Eran Yarkoni, who previously managed Intel's Pentium Processor product line, and Dr. Uzi Koren, who previously developed Electro-absorption Modulated Laser (EML) technology at Lucent's Bell Labs.  The company is funded by Jerusalem Venture Partners, Innovacom, Natexis and Eurofund.  http://www.cyoptics.com/
