CISCO ANNOUNCES ITS VOFDM-BASED WIRELESS CARRIER TRIAL WITH NUCENTRIX
Nucentrix Broadband Networks, which holds Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS) spectrum licenses in markets across the US, will begin testing Cisco Systems' Vector Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (VOFDM) technology for offering wireless broadband Internet access.  The first trial will be conducted in Austin, Texas beginning in April.  http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/146/pressroom/2000/feb00/sp_020400.htm
Cisco Systems, February 7, 2000

Vector Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (VOFDM) provides a mechanism for reassembling MMDS signals at a receiving site. The technology is designed to support data rates of 50 Mbps while overcoming line-of-sight issues.

Last October, Cisco Systems and ten other technology companies formed a wireless standards coalition to standardize a Media Access Control (MAC) and a VOFDM Physical Layer specification for broadband wireless services.  Cisco gained VOFDM technology through its acquisition of Clarity Wireless in September 1998.

AANETCOM'S OCTALPHY AIMS TO REPLACE PARALLEL BACKPLANES OF ROUTERS/SWITCHES
AANetcom, a start-up based in San Jose, California announced an "OctalPHY" chip designed to boost the bandwidth of routers and switches by replacing parallel backplane designs with high-speed serial links.  AANetcom said that unlike the conventional method of using parallel busses and backplanes, its high-speed serial links would scale over multiple generations as improving process technology allows increased baud rates.  The approach enables the integration of large numbers of serial I/O ports with millions of gates of logic.  The AANetcom device can convert a 160 bit wide parallel backplane operating at 125 MHz into sixteen differential pair serial connections each operating up to 1.56 Gbps.  The company is funded by Cisco Systems and Safeguard Scientifics.  http://www.aanetcom.com/frproducts.html

COSINE LANDS MULTIMILLION ORDER FROM QWEST
Qwest placed a multi-million dollar purchase order for CoSine Communications' IP Service Delivery platforms.  CoSine's platform can be used to create a service-processing layer between the access concentration edge of service provider networks and their high-speed cores, enabling valued-added Virtual Private Networks (VPN) services.  CoSine's product includes an IPSX 9000 service processing switch with a 22 Gbps midplane (11 Gbps with protection), hot- swappable Services Blades, automatic failover and redundant power systems. Each CoSine Processor Blade includes multiple RISC-based CPUs and built-in memory to power future services. Services planned for the IPSX 9000 include IPSec (dedicated and dial), Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP), Point-to-Point Protocol (PPTP), application proxy firewall, key management, bandwidth management, packet filtering, MPLS and Network Address Translation (NAT). The platform connects to enterprise routers via Frame Relay or private- line connections; uplinks to the service provider's core routers and switches use 10/100 Ethernet, DS-3, OC-3c ATM or OC-3c Packet-Over-SONET links.  http://www.cosinecom.com
