Telecom will acquire the stakes of Sprint and Deutsche Telekom in the
Global One joint venture for a total equity value of $3.882 billion.
Global One operates a worldwide ATM-based network reaching more

BCE
TO DISTRIBUTE ITS 37% INTEREST IN NORTEL NETWORKS
BCE,
Canada's global telecommunications company, will
distribute its approximate 37% ownership interest in Nortel Networks to
its shareholders. All current BCE common shareholders will then own two
securities and have a direct interest in both BCE and Nortel Networks.
Going forward, BCE will focus on its other communications services
businesses, consisting of Bell Canada (including Bell Mobility), BCE
Emergis, CGI, BCE Media (including Bell ExpressVu and Telesat Canada) and

CONCERT GLOBAL VENTURE TO USE CLARENT FOR IP CLEARINGHOUSE
Clarent
Corporation will supply its IP telephony gateways to the new AT&T/BT
Concert venture. Concert
plans to use the Clarent products to enhance and extend the capabilities
and geographic reach of the AT&T Global Clearinghouse, which enables
ISPs to terminate voice traffic to countries around the world.
Concert will soon introduce the Global Clearinghouse as
premier service. The order was

products as the basis for a new global IP telephony clearinghouse and also

a start-up developing a carrier-grade software switch, announced support
for Tekelec's Transport Adapter Layer Interface (TALI), which is a middleware
protocol that allows operators to support call set-up and tear-down,
access full-featured service platforms, and perform diagnostics and
monitoring in SS7 or IP networks. ipVerse's
new ControlSwitch uses a
distributed architecture to scale beyond one million busy hour call
attempts (BHCA), offers web-based tools and an XML-based language for
augmented services, and support of protocols including SS7, Q.931, H.323,
MGCP, and SIP. The platform

Last
month, Tekelec opened its Transport Adapter Layer Interface (TALI) SS7/IP
source code to the telecommunications and Internet industries as part of
Tekelec's ongoing effort to promote an open network convergence solution
featuring open interfaces. TALI
defines an interface between a Signaling Gateway (SG) and any IP-enabled
Signaling End Points (IP-SEP) such as Service Control Points (SCP) or
Media Gateway Controllers (MGCs). TALI was also submitted to the IETF with
the support of Level 3 and U S WEST Wireless, two service providers
currently deploying the interface. The
source code is available on the Tekelec website.

Mitsubishi
Electric has established a North American-based company called PACEON
Corp. to pursue the market for advanced optical access technology.
More specifically, PACEON will develop equipment for Full Service
Access Network systems based on ATM and Passive Optical Network (PON)

Network Communications will co-market Jetstream's CPX-1000 broadband voice

MOUNTAIN TO ACQUIRE ONPREM NETWORKS FOR SMALL DSL CONCENTRATOR
Copper
Mountain will acquire OnPrem Networks Corp., a start-up developing a DSL
concentrator for the small and medium building Multi-Tenant Unit (MTU)
market, for 1.3 million CMTN shares (valued at about $69 million).
OnPrem is working on an 8 to 24 port DSL concentrator that could be
used to provision services to small apartment buildings.
