ENRON TO DEPLOY 18K SUN SERVERS TO PROVIDE DISTRIBUTED INTELLIGENCE FOR GLOBAL IP NETWORK
Enron Broadband Services will purchase 18,000 Netra carrier-grade and Enterprise servers and associated storage and services from Sun to expand the footprint of its Enron Intelligent Network (EIN) to more than 2,000 points of presence worldwide.  Enron's pure IP network will leverage a distributed server architecture and embedded software intelligence, called the Enron Broadband Operating System that will enable real-time provisioning of bandwidth across multiple networks.  Enron said its network will provide forward reservation of bandwidth, real-time provisioning, dynamic content management and security features.  In addition, Enron's BOS will make the network programmable because of the built-in interfaces with all the major physical elements in the network, such as routers and servers, and software elements, such as caching and reservation software.  For its part of the alliance, Sun agreed to purchase broadband video streaming services from Enron.  The companies will also engage in joint marketing efforts to promote EIN services.  http://www.enron.net    http://www.sun.com
Enron, January 20, 2000

Enron's unique "Pure IP" infrastructure combines the company’s national fiber network, IP/DWDM gigabit routers, a proprietary InterAgent middleware control layer and a distributed server architecture developed in alliance with Sun Microsystems.  The InterAgent software uses a proprietary routing methodology to provide tiered QoS levels from the company's distributed servers, as well as event messaging, a reservation system, metering/billing, QoS control and directory services.  The Sun servers will be deployed at Enron's major nodes, as well as in the POPs of distribution channel partners.
