FUJITSU REPORTS SURGING DEMAND FOR OC-192 TRANSPORT
Fujitsu Network Communications will double its current production capacity for its FLASH-192 10 Gbps optical transport system over the next year to meet surging market demand.  The company will invest $500 million in production facilities.  The FLASH-192 system is a SONET add/drop multiplexer designed for interoffice and interexchange carrier networks.  By next year, Fujitsu anticipates demand for 1,000 FLASH-192 systems per month -- 10 times what it was at the beginning of 1999.  Fujitsu also offers a FLASHWAVE WDM system capable of carrying up to 32 channels of up to OC-192; a unidirectional WDM solution that supports up to 16 channels of OC-48; and a bidirectional Metro solution that can transport eight channels of OC-48 in each direction on a fiber.  http://www.fnc.fujitsu.com

KDD PURCHASES $100 MILLION IN CAPACITY ON GLOBAL CROSSING NETWORK
Japan's KDD Group agreed to purchase $100 million in bandwidth capacity on the new Pacific Crossing 1, the undersea cable owned by Asia Global Crossing, a joint venture of Global Crossing, Softbank, and Microsoft.  The deal also gives KDD access to full Global Crossing Network.  Last month, Global Crossing completed the initial cable connections on the northern section of the Pacific Crossing-1 (PC-1) network.  The full network will be a 21,000-km, four-fiber pair self-healing ring linking the US and Japan.  http://www.globalcrossing.com/pressreleases/pr_010500.htm

TELCORDIA TO PROVIDE TELEPHONY FUNCTIONALITY FOR INTEL'S WEB APPLIANCES
Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bellcore) will provide enhanced telephone functionality, Custom Local Area Signaling Services (CLASS) and Custom Calling Service support, and intelligent capabilities for Intel's forthcoming line of Web appliances.  The Intel-branded Web appliances, which are expected to debut in mid-year, will integrate Internet access with telephony features such as call management and unified messaging.  Intel will market the devices to telecom operators and service providers.  Intel will work with other companies to provide applications and content for the Intel Web appliance, including NEC's BIGLOBE in Japan and LASER-Galeries Lafayette Group in France.  http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/in010500.htm

ADTECH SHIPS OC-48C POS TEST SOLUTION
Adtech began shipping a new 2.488 Gbps POS Generator/Analyzer module for its AX/4000 Broadband Test System.  The new OC-48c POS test solution enables carriers and switch manufacturers to measure high speed IP network performance and QoS at full-rate.  The module generates up to 4,095 test streams with each stream containing literally billions of traffic flows. MOTOROLA AND GENERAL INSTRUMENT COMPLETE MERGER
Motorola completed its $17 billion acquisition of General Instrument.  Motorola said the acquisition would enable it to lead the transition to converged services in the home.  Combined 1998 sales of the two companies were $31.3 billion.  General Instrument is a leading equipment supplier for digital TV networks and hybrid fiber coax (HFC) networks.   Its product portfolio includes digital set-top boxes, digital and analog programming systems, HFC transmission systems, digital satellite TV systems, and DOCSIS cable modem systems. http://www.mot.com/

MOTOROLA ADDS FAST RETRAIN FEATURES TO DSL CHIPS
Motorola has added a Fast Retrain feature to its CopperGold Lite DSL chipset.  The fast retrain feature keeps Web browsing from being interrupted by reestablishing the connection in less than 1.5 seconds.  Motorola also added power cut back capability that enables a G.Lite modem to maintain a high quality voice call simultaneously with a DSL connection in a splitterless environment.  http://www.motorola.com/semiconductors

ART PLANS TO DEPLOY BROADBAND WIRELESS SERVICES IN 10 US MARKETS THIS YEAR
Advanced Radio Telecom (ART) said it will deploy broadband wireless IP services in 10 US markets this year, including Boston, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Orange County, Calif., Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle, and Washington D.C.  ART currently offers a 100 Mbps 100Mbps Internet access service to businesses in San Jose.  The company has a strategic partnership with Qwest Communications.  The company had previously disclosed plans to roll out wireless services in a total of 40 markets over the next few years. http://www.art-net.net/content/news/releases/2000/000105.html

Last year, ART received a $251 million equity investment with Qwest Communications and a group of high-tech investment funds - Oak Investment Partners, MeriTech Capital Partners, Advent International, Columbia Capital, Accel Partners, Brentwood Venture Capital, Worldview Technology Partners, Bessemer Venture Capital, and Adams Capital Management. ART owns a nationwide footprint of 38GHz spectrum licenses in the US, as well as 26GHz and/or 38GHz spectrum licenses in the US and several Scandinavian countries. 

AUDIOCODES ANNOUNCES FIRST OCTAL-T1 COMPACT-PCI VOIP BOARD
AudioCodes announced a compactPCI IP Telephony board that supports 192 channels of voice, fax and data services, an increase of 60 % over current highest density VoIP compactPCI solutions.  The new TrunkPack-VoIP/600 communications board enables trunking media gateway applications. It integrates eight T1 or six E1 trunk interfaces to the PSTN, and media streaming over the on-board 100Base-T interface. The integrated trunks interface with the PSTN and support CAS or PRI signaling protocols.  AudioCodes plans to make the board MGCP-enabled, while maintaining support for its own API's.  http://www.audiocodes.com

PANASONIC AND NET2PHONE ALLIANCE OFFERS INTERNET-BASED PHONE SERVICE
Kyushu Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (Panasonic) agreed to integrate to integrate a "One Touch" Internet-based phone service from Net2Phone into its future consumer telephone products.  The Panasonic phone would be able to complete both public switched and IP phone calls.  http://www.net2phone.com
