LUCENT'S 2.4 GHZ ENTERPRISE NETWORKING SYSTEM TO SPAN 10 MILE RANGES
Lucent Technologies announced a point-to-point and point-to-multipoint outdoor wireless networking system that operates in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz band and is capable of spanning distances of up to 10 miles (16 km) with various levels of security encryption (64-bit WEP and 128 bit RC4).  The new WaveACCESS system supports 11 Mbps links.  The point-to-multipoint WaveACCESS system consists of a Central Office (CO) Router that can connect up to 16 WaveACCESS Remote Office Routers and associated networks, or 32 WaveACCESS PC Card radios per channel, each running the Internet Client software (up to 3 separate 11 Mbps channels are possible).  The point-to-point WaveACCESS system consists of WaveACCESS Remote Office Routers for links between campus buildings and their interior networks.  Lucent said that in addition to campus network applications, the 2.4 GHz WaveAccess products could be used by ISPs for wireless services.  http://www.lucent.com/press/0100/000103.mea.html

BEIJING PTT SELECTS ADC'S CELLWORX ATM VIRTUAL PATH RING SOLUTION
The Beijing province of China's PTT selected ADC's Cellworx Service Transport Node (STN) to provide a bandwidth optimized ATM virtual path ring solution for its voice, frame relay, and ATM transport services.  The Cellworx STN ATM virtual path ring solution frees up stranded bandwidth to support more subscribers, without significant infrastructure investments.  The initial deployment covers 13 Cellworx nodes, as well as ADC's ATM Access Concentrators, for three STM-4c rings.  ADC's partner Gaohong Telecom Co. Ltd. will customize the platform for the specific needs of the Chinese market.  ADC said the deployment represents the first international ATM virtual path ring deployment for any PTT.  http://www.adc.com/  http://www.gaohong.com.cn

The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Standards Board approved the final 1000BASE-T specification for Gigabit Ethernet over copper (also known as IEEE Std 802.3ab) in June 1999. The specification defines Gigabit Ethernet operation over distances of up to 100 meters using four pairs of CAT-5 balanced copper cabling. The specification also enables auto-negotiation between 100 and 1000 Mbps systems. The earlier Gigabit Ethernet standard (IEEE 802.3z), which was ratified in June 1998, defined transceivers for multimode and single mode fiber.
