LUCENT TO RESELL SPRING TIDE'S IP SERVICE SWITCH
Lucent Technologies will resell Spring Tide Networks' IP Service Switch 5000 on an OEM basis.  The Spring Tide switch delivers high-density session aggregation and network-based service intelligence required for IP VPNs and other value-added IP services.  The Spring Tide switch is capable of applying a unique set of bitstream processing functions for each flow (either packet or cell) at wire speed, including encryption, compression, filtering, classification, tagging, queuing, and address translation.  The switch uses MMC Networks' AnyFlow 5500 network processors, Hi/fn's 7711 encryption/compression processors, and IRE's SafeNet DSP cryptographic processors. Wholesale service providers could use the Spring Tide platform for tunnel termination and for the aggregation of DSL, cable modem and wireless traffic.  Spring Tide is based in Boxborough, Mass.  http://www.lucent.com/press/1299/991216.nsb.html

CISCO TO COLLABORATE WITH NARUS ON IP SEMANTIC TRAFFIC ANALYSIS
Cisco Systems announced a broad alliance with NARUS covering
collaborative efforts in application usage analysis, network service monitoring and network management for service providers.  Narus is developing an IP traffic analysis solution that measures usage of IP services in real time and then integrates the data into third party IP billing applications.  NARUS Semantics Analyzers are unique hardware appliances that install in any network and capture application-level usage information in real time directly from the network.  The companies will test and certify the NARUS technology in a Cisco 12000 Gigabit Switch Router environment.  Cisco said the NARUS relationship adds a real-time usage dimension to its own mediation strategy, complimenting its Netflow, RADIUS, Call Detail Record (CDR) and voice billing solutions.  Cisco will also increase its participation in the IP Detail Record (IPDR) standards process, which was initially established by NARUS.

THE ATM FORUM ADVANCES VODSL, FATE AND DCP SPECIFICATIONS
At a technical committee meeting last week in Beverly Hills, California, the ATM Forum made progress on several fronts, including Voice over DSL (VoDSL), Frame-based ATM Transport over Ethernet (FATE) and Device Control Protocol (DCP).  Highlights include:

  • For addressing the VoDSL market, the ATM Forum's Local Loop Emulation Service (LLES) over AAL2 specification (phase one) is now expected to reach straw ballot status in February 2000
  • The ATM Forum is finalizing work on Frame-based ATM Transport over Ethernet (FATE), in which ATM data is encapsulated in variable-length Ethernet frames
  • The Device Control Protocol (DCP) specification was sent to final ballot.  The protocol is useful for intra-equipment communications, such as between port cards on an ATM switch.

The next ATM Forum Technical Committee Meeting will take place in Yokohama, Japan, February 20th - 25th, 2000.  http://www.atmforum.com
