LUCENT
TO RESELL TELLIUM’S OPTICAL CROSSCONNECT SWITCHES
Lucent Technologies will resell Tellium's optical switching
products StarNet Restoration Software, and other software modules under
a two-year OEM agreement. Tellium’s
Aurora optical switch provides wavelength grooming and wavelength
interchange, as well as optical restoration in the event of a fiber cut.
Lucent said the Tellium product would expand its optical
portfolio, allowing carriers to choose the optical switching solutions
that best suits their need.

Earlier
this week, Tellium announced the coupling of its open StarNet optical
signaling protocol to Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) based routing and
Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) based signaling.
Tellium said the combination of OSPF, and MPLS StarNet would make
the optical layer act like a dynamic Internet with competitive Optical
Service Level Agreements (OSLAs) backed by millisecond re-routing,
protection and restoration capabilities.
The Tellium platform allows service providers to cross-connect
optical signals up to OC-48 while bypassing the SONET/DCS layer.
Tellium recently disclosed plans for larger optical cross connect
with the capacity of 512 OC-48s -- a total switching capacity of 1.28
Tbps. The platform
features a fully redundant switch architecture with I/O port protection
(1:N user programmable), dynamic wavelength management, optical line
protection switching of less than 50 msec, SONET performance monitoring,
optical ring restoration and optical mesh restoration software.
Last
month, Lucent Technologies announced an all-optical
WaveStar LambdaRouter that uses an array of micro-mirrors to direct and
route individual wavelengths from fiber to fiber.
Lucent said the micro-mirrors are tilted so that an individual
wavelength can be passed to any of 256 input and output fibers. All 256
mirrors are fabricated on less than one square inch of silicon. This
switching fabric provides more than 32 times greater density than
electronic fabrics. Commercial
availability was forecast for December 2000
CIENA
UNVEILS ITS PLANS FOR 10 GBPS METRO DWDM
Ciena announced plans to support 10 Gbps services, including 10
Gbps Ethernet and protected SONET OC-192, over its MultiWave Metro
intelligent optical transport system by the end of the first half of
calendar 2000. The system
will scale to support up to 24 wavelengths of 10 Gbps traffic per fiber,
over linear, ring and mesh topologies.
Ciena expects carriers will use the MultiWave Metro platform for
high-capacity traffic collection, for point-of-presence
interconnections, for service overbuilds and to create new broadband
networks on leased fiber. http://www.ciena.com

KPNQWEST
BEGINS EUROPEAN DSL ROLLOUTS
KPNQwest will begin rolling out local DSL services aimed at
small and medium-sized enterprises in over 25 cities in nine European
countries. The planned
deployment involves the co-location of DSL equipment in over 1,400
central offices.
KPNQwest’s first DSL
rollouts will be in Germany, where the company says the local loop has
effectively been unbundled and the regulatory framework is in place to
allow equipment co-location in Deutsche Telecom central offices. So far,
KPNQwest has secured licenses in four German cities: Dusseldorf,
Frankfurt, Koln and Munich. The company will deploy its DSL equipment in
23 central offices in Dusseldorf, where the service will be introduced
by mid-2000.

LUCENT
ADDS ADSL-OVER-ISDN TO STINGER DSLAM
Lucent Technologies
announced a new ADSL-over-ISDN interface module for its Stinger DSL
access concentrator. The
new feature allows service providers to deliver ADSL over an existing
ISDN infrastructure. The
ADSL-over-ISDN module for Stinger supports up to 24 ports, or 336 ports
per Stinger chassis and uses the ITU standard G.992.1 Annex B for ADSL
on ISDN lines. The module will be available by the end of this year.

N.E.T.
TO ACQUIRE FLOWWISE NETWORKS, ADDING IP TO ITS MULTISERVICE PLATFORM
N.E.T. will acquire FlowWise Networks, a developer of
high-performance router acceleration products, for $16 million in cash.
Flowise’s router acceleration products include a
self-configuring layer two, three and four IP
switch. The products use a
custom its Xpressway routing ASIC that provides 4-Gbps non-blocking
switching that is capable of routing millions of packets per second.
N.E.T. plans to integrate the FlowWise technology to complement its
current Promina 800 platform. FlowWise is based in San Jose, California.
The deal is expected to close this quarter.
