CISCO ANNOUNCES 12000 TERABIT ROUTING SYSTEM WITH OC-192C INTERFACES
Cisco Systems unveiled its 12000 Terabit System supporting OC192c/STM64 interfaces for IP backbones. The 12000 Terabit System, which runs Cisco IOS, uses a crossbar switch fabric architecture.   Cisco's initial product in the Terabit series will be the 12016 GSR, a carrier class router supporting up to 15 OC-192c/STM64 (10Gbps) interfaces and a switching capacity that scales to 320 Gbps.  The unit also accepts the existing range of Cisco GSR interfaces, including Packet-over-SONET (PoS), ATM, Gigabit Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Dynamic Packet Transport from speeds of DS3 and up.  Other attributes include system latency as low as 13 microseconds and Class of Service capabilities.  Pricing starts at $65,000.  Qwest Communications is already using the 12016 GSR for the first coast-to-coast OC-192c link, running production traffic between its New York and Sunnyvale, Calif. Internet POPs. During a latest Cisco test, Qwest successfully streamed 270 Mbps of video traffic over the network while at the same time handling normal Internet traffic at its two busiest hubs.  Qwest plans to upgrade its nationwide OC-48 network to OC-192c beginning in Q2 2000.  http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/146/december99/sp_121399b.html

GTE COMPLETES NATIONWIDE FIBER BACKBONE
GTE completed its 17,000-route mile fiber backbone across the US.  GTE has activated one of the 12 pairs of dark fiber it purchased in 1997 and deployed it with OC-192 capacity and OC-48 enabled circuits.  The network architecture features OC-192 SONET equipment, four-fiber Bi-directional Line-Switched Ring (BLSR) SONET ring protection and Automatic Protection Switching (APS). It supports private line, ATM and IP layer services.  http://www.gte.com/

LEVEL 3 INTRODUCES WHOLESALE VOIP SERVICE
Level 3 Communications introduced commercial, wholesale VoIP service aimed at enhanced service providers, fax service providers, wireless service providers and competitive local exchange carriers. Level 3 Communications said the service offers customers voice quality indistinguishable from traditional telephone networks, based on a range of metrics such as latency, jitter and packet loss.  If the quality ever drops below the quality of the traditional phone network, Level 3 said it would move traffic back onto the traditional phone network.  Level 3's Softswitch-based network architecture is also used for the companys managed modem service, which currently processes over a billion minutes of Internet connections per month.  http://www.Level3.com
