EXTREME NETWORKS ADDS PROVISIONING TOOLS FOR ISPS
Extreme Networks added a series of service provisioning software tools to its Summit and BlackDiamond switches designed for ISPs and web content providers.  New capabilities include:

  • VLAN aggregation, which maximizes the efficiency of IP address usage in server co-location environments by isolating customer traffic to sub-VLANs in separate broadcast domains.

  • Wire-Speed Layer 1-4 Access lists, which can be used to restrict or perform bandwidth management on a per packet basis for Layer 1-4 information, including physical port, MAC address, VLAN, IP subnet and mask, TCP/UDP port range

  • Layer 4 wire-speed server load balancing, which uses technology from F5 Networks

  • Transparent web cache redirection, which operates at wire speed based on any Layer 4 criteria, such as HTTP traffic, to a single or set of web cache devices

  • Extreme Standby Router Protocol (ESRP), which combines Layer 2 redundancy with additional Layer 3 capabilities

  • Policy-Based QoS extended to DiffServ (IP TOS):  minimum and maximum bandwidth parameters of each queue can be mapped to DiffServ.

MCI WORLDCOM AND SPRINT ARGUE THAT MERGER WOULD BOOST BROADBAND WIRELESS
In a filing to the FCC seeking approval for their proposed merger, MCI WorldCom and Sprint argue that the combined company would offer a third choice for residential broadband access.  The companies stated that with "AT&T blocking access to its monopoly cable plant and the Bells trying to limit competitive access to digital subscriber loop facilities," they would combine their complementary MMDS wireless assets in order to provide a national broadband service.
