STORAGE
AREA NETWORKS COMBINES FIBRE CHANNEL, SCSI, ATM AND GIGABIT
ETHERNET
Storage
Area Networks Limited, a start-up based in Cambridge (UK),
announced a second-generation SAN gateway providing very high
performance switching between Fibre Channel, SCSI, ATM and
Gigabit Ethernet. The switch allows full Fibre Channel and SCSI
connectivity, over any distance, across ATM or Gigabit Ethernet
connections that are transparent to the user.
This allows host computers (servers etc.) to connect to
remote storage devices (disk, tape etc.) via Fibre Channel or
SCSI interfaces. SAN's
second-generation box supports 155 Mbps or 622 Mbps ATM
connections, Fibre Channel (FC-AL) connections, Ultra 2 SCSI
connections (transfer rates up to 80MB/s) with support for
single-ended, differential (HVD) and LVD SCSI buses, Gigabit
Ethernet IP connections, and a 10/100Mbit Ethernet connection
for unit management. Product availability is expected in January 2000 from around
$15,000 per unit. Storage
Area Networks Ltd was formed by the founders of K-NET Ltd, a
leading ATM network integrator in the UK, and i-cubed Ltd.

TURNSTONE
AND SUNRISE PROVIDE INTEROPERABLE DSL TEST UNITS
Sunrise
Telecom of San Jose, California is offering xDSL Hand-Held Sets
that are interoperable with Turnstone Systems' central office
DSL line testing platform.
Turnstone's Copper CrossConnect CX100 currently supports
single-ended testing, enabling service providers to perform loop
qualification and testing through software, without involving
field technicians. The
Sunrise Telecom handheld test solution enables two-ended
field-testing of copper loops.
Once a technician connects a SunSet xDSL device to the
loop, the Copper CrossConnect CX100 automatically detects the
unit and initiates a sequence of tests in both directions.
