SYCAMORE
NETWORKS SKYROCKETS IN IPO
Sycamore Networks made a spectacular IPO debut on
Friday (October 22), rising 386% over its opening price to close at 184 ¾,
giving the company a market capitalization of $14.4 billion. The initial
public offering price for the 7.475 million shares (NASDAQ:SCMR) was $38
per share. For comparison,
3Com had a market capitalization of 9.467billion as of Friday's close
(October 22).
Sycamore is developing
an optical platform with switching/routing intelligence for providing
dynamic wavelength services. The
product line consists of an Intelligent Optical Transport Node that
delivers long haul OC-48 private lines, ATM and/or IP trunk services over
an existing SONET OC-192 infrastructure.
On the service side, the SN 6000 provides an OC-48/STM-16 interface
to ATM switches, IP routers or to other SONET/SDH terminals.
On the network side, the SN 6000 provides wavelength conversion and
optical multiplexing of the OC-48/STM-16s onto OC-192/STM-64 trunks.
The platform supports 1-44 wavelengths using the 50GHz ITU grid and
it scales up to 28 OC-48s/STM-16s per rack.
Sycamore is also developing intelligent optical add/drop nodes,
which initially extend to distances of 500 km without regeneration and
provide 1-44 wavelengths. So
far, Sycamore has disclosed 2 customers for its platform: Williams and
Millennium Optical Networks, a CLEC developing carrier-to-carrier
communications in New York City. Williams,
which placed an initial $24.5 million order for Sycamore equipment in
March, expects the platform to reduce the lead times for provisioning new
services from months to days. Sycamore
Networks is led by Gururaj "Desh" Deshpande, founder and
chairman, and Dan Smith, president and CEO. Deshpande and Smith were the
former chairman and CEO, respectively, of Cascade Communications.

GDC
FORMS ALLIANCE WITH TODD COMMUNICATIONS FOR MPEG2/ATM
General
DataComm (GDC) formed an alliance with TODD Communications to integrate
Todd's web-based video management and control software with GDC's new MAC
500 ATM MPEG-2 access concentrator. The
companies will provide a large-scale broadband video solution for
telemedicine, distance educational, corporate and government applications. Todd's control software includes a Web-based Session
Scheduler, Connection
Control application, Room and Session Control application and an
Administrative application. GDC's
MAC 500 multimedia access concentrator provides low-latency MPEG-2 video
compression and IP/Ethernet access over next generation Internet and ATM,
while eliminating the need for multiple standalone video codecs and
associated network access ports. The joint solution will also use GDC's
APEX ATM switches and Multimedia Multipoint Server (MMS). TODD
Communications is based in Minneapolis.
