ERICSSON INTEGRATES MANAGEMENT TOOLS FOR ITS IP CORE, EDGE, ACCESS ROUTERS
Ericsson will provide integrated network management for it IP core, edge and access routers by Q1 2000. The same management tools will be extended to Ericsson's 3G mobile data networks later next year. Ericsson's core IP router is provided through an OEM relationship with Juniper Networks. Since entering the OEM alliance with Juniper in March 1999, the Ericsson's core AXI 520 has been installed in more than 10 active field trials, including networks running MPLS, IP over ATM, Packet over WDM, SDH and SONET. The integrated management tools will include a Java-based application for monitoring network resources, and an umbrella application for collecting, filtering and correlating network events to provisioned services. http://www.ericsson.se/pressroom

ERICSSON DEMONSTRATES MPLS INTEROPERABILITY
At Telecom '99, Ericsson demonstrated interoperability between its AXI 540 edge aggregation router (Torrent) and its core AXI 520 (Juniper's M40) routers using MPLS with RSVP-based traffic engineering. Both routers implemented Label Edge Routing (LER) as well as Label Switch Routing (LSR). Ericsson showed support for both Constraint-Based Routed Label Distribution (CR-LDP), for Layer 3 determination; and Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP), for predetermined paths. http://www.ericsson.se/pressroom

The AXI 540 router was developed by Torrent Networking Technologies, a start-up that Ericsson acquired in April for US$450 million in cash. The product is being positioned within Ericsson's data portfolio as the IP aggregation point for high-speed fixed-access traffic from leased lines and ATM/Frame Relay networks. A Torrent-developed silicon based IP packet processor provides wire speed route lookup and flexible packet classification on each port, including DiffServ and MPLS functionality.

GLOBAL CROSSING COMBINES PIRELLI DWDM WITH HITACHI SONET OC-192
Pirelli's WaveMux DWDM platform is now operational on Global Crossing's North American Crossing network (formerly the Frontier Optronics Network). The system is capable of transmission at both OC-48 and OC-192 levels over Global Crossing's 20,000 route miles of non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber. The Pirelli system is scalable to 128 wavelengths per
fiber pair. Hitachi's AMN 5192 SONET OC-192 terminals are also deployed in the network. http://www.pirelli.com

ALCATEL'S LMDS PLATFORM ENTERS FIRST COMMERCIAL DEPLOYMENTS
Formus Communications is the first to commercially deploy Alcatel's EVOLIUM LMDS platform. The broadband wireless access network will operate in the 28 GHz frequency band, providing services to large and medium-sized businesses in Poland. Alcatel said its LMDS platform is also currently undergoing field trials in France, Germany, Belgium, Austria and Greece. In Japan, Alcatel is providing trial LMDS networks to two New Common Carriers. The first operational services are scheduled for November and December 1999. Alcatel expects to have 30 LMDS trials by the end of the year. http://www.alcatel.com

ECI TELECOM'S VDSL DELIVERS 26MBPS DOWNLINK SPEEDS
At Telecom '99, ECI Telecom demonstrated a VDSL (Very High-Bit Rate Digital Subscriber Line) solution supporting asymmetrical rates up to 26Mbps downstream and 3Mbps upstream, and symmetrical rates up to 13Mbps. The VDSL interfaces are integrated into ECI Telecom's Hi-FOCuS platform, which also supports ADSL, ADSL lite and SDSL. The system
additionally features ATM-OAM (Operation, Administration and Maintenance) capabilities. http://www.ecitele.com/rvdsl.htm

TELESENS GMBH INTRODUCES IP AND ATM BILLING SYSTEM
Telesens GmbH introduced an integrated billing system that measures ATM and IP traffic and offers a flexible tariff management structure. The Telesens Billforce system records all data related to the connection, such as type, content and quality of service. It covers both PVCs and SVCs. Tariff management is simplified by use of Tariff Definition Language (TDL) that allows changes to be applied through a tree structure, instead of a table. http://www.telesens.de/

SIARA SYSTEMS NAMES KEY DEVELOPERS FOR ITS IP-OVER-SONET ASIC EFFORT
Siara Systems, a start-up developing IP-over-SONET ASICs, named Ravi Chandra to lead its IP software development effort. Chandra formerly worked in Cisco Systems' IOS software group, where he was Manager of the Large Scale Switching and Routing Group. Siara Systems also named Pankaj Patel as its Senior Vice President of engineering. Patel also previously held several executive level positions with Cisco. Siara's IP-over-SONET ASICs are being developed to provide packet validation, packet classification, traffic conditioning, and packet forwarding capabilities. The Mountain View, California company received venture  funding from Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield, and Byers, Norwest Capital and ADC Telecommunications. http://www.siara.com
