AT&T
EXTENDS ITS INTEGRATED NETWORK CONNECTION TO 900 HOME DEPOT STORES
AT&T will provide its new ATM-based Integrated Network Connection
Service (INCS) to over 900 stores operated by The Home Depot, the nationwide
home improvement retail chain. AT&T's INCS supports up to 24 voice calls and
over 1.2 Mbps of Frame Relay or IP traffic on
one T1 ATM line. AT&T provides a customer premise ATM multiplexer
to integrate the voice and data traffic. Thirty Home Depot stores in several
states are currently using the network to support in-store applications, such as
customer credit validation and
inventory management; all 900 Home Deport locations will be connected by
mid-2000. The 3-year contract was valued at more than $100 million. http://www.att.com/press/item/0,1193,670,00.html

AGILENT
TECHNOLOGIES (HP) ACQUIRES QOSNETICS FOR TESTING SYSTEMS
Agilent Technologies, the new company resulting from HP's plan to
strategically realign itself into two fully independent
companies,
has acquired Qosnetics, a startup developing IP-based
conformance verification and performance stressing tools. Financial terms were
not disclosed. Qosnetics offers an automated test system that
combines router protocol conformance, validation and stress
testing with traffic generation capabilities. The system offers the capability
to act as a traffic intermediary for effecting quality
of service (QoS) characteristics, including propagation delay,
packet loss, jitter, latency and congestion. The test platform supports 10/100
Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, ATM/OC3, and Serial
(Frame Relay and PPP) interface cards. Qosnetics will join HP's
Advanced Networks Division, which is part of the company's Communications
Solutions Group. Last month, HP filed registration
papers with the SEC for the initial public offering of the
common
stock of its subsidiary, Agilent Technologies. http://www.hp.com/pressrel/sep99/20sep99h.htm

JDS
UNIPHASE ACQUIRES AFC TECHNOLOGIES FOR DWDM AMPLIFIERS
JDS Uniphase acquired AFC Technologies, a start-up developing
optical amplifiers and broadband instruments, for an
undisclosed sum. Earlier this year, AFC Technologies introduced a series
of SmartAmp amplifiers that use higher efficiency Double Band Fiber
Amplifier (DBFA) technology and intelligent elements for
control
and monitoring. AFC said its SmartAmp doubles the
conventional EDFA bandwidth barrier to 75 nm and offers fast response for
add/drops and accurate gain control. AFC Technologies was founded
in 1996 and has 12 full-time employees. The company is
based in Hull, Quebec. http://www.jdsunph.com/

HP
UNVEILS "WEB-PLUG" FOR LOW-COST ETHERNET APPLIANCE CONNECTIVITY
Hewlett-Packard (HP) introduced an embedded 10Base-T measurement
and control "plug" designed as a low-cost
commercial way to make products Internet accessible. The matchbook-sized
module supports
the recently adopted IEEE 1451.2 standard for interfacing
sensors
and actuators with microprocessors, and supports standard
protocols
such as TCP/IP and HTTP over any 10Base-T Ethernet network.
The device offers time synchronization to make correlated measurements
and to precisely control events. http://www.hpie.com/
