IAXIS PLANS CO-LOCATION FACILITIES TO ENHANCE ITS DWDM SERVICES
Iaxis, a venture backed group building a carrier's carrier network
throughout Europe using leased dark fiber, raised new funding to build a series of full-service "carrier hotels" for providing managed co-location services in a secure, carrier-neutral environment. Iaxis and The Carlyle Group, a leading global investment firm based in Washington, D.C., plan to open their first co-location facilities in Paris and Milan by the end of the year. Financial terms were not disclosed. Phase One of the Iaxis fiber network -- a 3,000 km ring linking London, Paris, Strasbourg, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Antwerp and Brussels -- is currently operational. The network uses Ciena's DWDM platform. Iaxis is led by Ray Dutton, a founder director of MFS Communications (acquired by WorldCom) http://www.iaxisbv.com/

AVANEX READIES OPTICAL WAVELENGTH PROCESSORS
Avanex Corporation, a start-up based in Fremont, California said it
would be ready to demonstrate its optical wavelength processors at next week's National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference in Chicago. Avanex is developing unique Wavelength Processors and Dispersion Compensation Processors designed to multiplex up to 800 wavelength channels with 12.5 GHz channel spacing. The company has previously said its proprietary processor would be capable of delivering any channel spacing, any bit rate and any channel number over its range. The Dispersion Compensation Processor would reduce chromatic dispersion effects for different transmission distances. At next week's conference, Avanex plans to show its OADM Processor in an 80-channel metro application, and also in a 160-channel metro DWDM upgrade plan wherein a 20-channel demultiplexer is upgraded with 20 additional channels at a time to achieve full capability. The venture-backed company is headed by Walter Alessandrini, the former president and CEO of Pirelli Cables and Systems North America. http://wwww.avanex.com

INKTOMI ACQUIRES WEBSPECTIVE FOR CONTENT DISTRIBUTION AND TRACKING
Inktomi plans to acquire WebSpective Software, a developer of
content distribution and tracking software, for about $106 million in stock. WebSpective's software will extend the Inktomi Traffic Server platform beyond its current web hosting functions to provide new content management services. Inktomi said the WebSpective software would also provide it with key components for the enterprise marketplace, which it plans to enter later this year. WebSpective software can replicate content to multiple servers in multiple geographies, synchronize content across multiple servers and caches, and then track content delivery from distributed web sites. Digital Island is currently using the combined Inktomi+WebSpective solution. WebSpective Software is a startup based in Needham, Mass.  Venture funding came from Bessemer Venture Partners, Charles River Ventures, Cisco Systems, Fidelity Investments and Morgenthaler Ventures. http://www.inktomi.com/new/press/webspective2.html

ATMOSPHERE NETWORKS RAISES $26 MILLION IN NEW FUNDING
Atmosphere Networks, a developer of optical access products, raised
$26 million in a third round of venture funding led by Bowman Capital, with Charter Growth Capital, Temasek Holdings, Vertex Management and Volpe Brown Whelan & Company joining as new investors. Previous investors include Benchmark Capital, Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), Foundation Capital, and Deutsche Bank. Atmosphere Networks offers a multi-service SONET/SDH add-drop multiplexer (ADM) that is optimized for carrying voice and data traffic in virtual path rings. The design replaces the stringent bandwidth constraints of TDM with a thin-layer of ATM for bandwidth efficiency. Atmosphere's Full Service Node was recently enhanced with higher density T1/T3, 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, OC3 and passive WDM interfaces. The platform is currently deployed in fifteen carrier networks. http://www.atmospherenet.com

INTEL EMPLOYS OLICOM'S R&D GROUP
Intel agreed to employ Olicom's development group and purchase
intellectual property and certain assets associated with that group. The deal involves approximately 220 Olicom development employees in Denmark and Poland. Olicom said it and its partners would continue to support its Ethernet and ATM product lines. Last month, Madge Networks acquired Olicom's Token Ring business for an up-front cash payment of US$15 million and additional cash payments over the next three years based on Madge's Token-Ring revenue performance. Olicom said it intends to dispose of its other business activities. The company attributes its downfall to a dramatic decline in its Token Ring business during 1999. http://www.olicom.com/
