LUCENT
INTRODUCES STINGER DSLAMS
Lucent Technologies announced availability of a new carrier-class
DSLAM chassis designed for delivering up to 16
voice lines along with data, Internet and video services over one copper
connection. Lucent's Stinger DSL access
concentrator, which uses technology acquired with Ascend Communications,
incorporates an ATM switching fabric
for ensuring end-to-end QoS capabilities. Either ATM or Frame Relay could
be used from the customer premises to the central office.
The Stinger chassis supports all versions of DSL-SDSL, ADSL (full-rate and
G.Lite), IDSL and HDSL2. The DSLAM provides up to 672 ports
per chassis and 2016 ports per rack. Lucent plans to scale Stinger to
support up to 9,000 ports on a single OC-12 trunk by next year.
Stinger pricing starts at $440.00 per port. Stinger's
voice over DSL capabilities will be delivered via third party
Integrated Access Devices (IADs) and voice gateways. Lucent's partners in
this space are Jetstream, TollBridge and CopperCom. Interoperable
customer premise equipment will be available from Atlas
Communication Engines, Cayman Systems, Efficient Networks, FlowPoint/Cabletron,
Netopia, XAVI, Xpeed and ZyXEL. Primary
Network Communications and MagnaCorp India Limited have agreed
to deploy the Stinger DSLAM. Twenty additional service providers
are currently testing the platform. http://www.lucent.com/press/0999/990907.nsa.html

Access Server, SLC LinkReach
Access System, AnyMedia Access System, and AnyMedia Access Interface Unit
for its 5ESS Switch.
ALCATEL
TARGETS 1 MILLION ADSL LINE SHIPMENTS FOR 1999,
INTRODUCES VDSL CARD
Alcatel has shipped more than
350,000 high-speed ADSL lines worldwide
in the first half of the year and anticipates shipping more
than one million lines by the end of the year. Since launching its
DSL product line in late 1997, Alcatel has shipped more than 450,000 ADSL
lines on the central office (CO) side and more than 180,000
ADSL CPE modems. The majority of Alcatel's shipments continue to be in the
US, although the company noted growth in Korea and
Singapore. Alcatel also announced the
first VDSL line card for its DSLAM platform. The product uses DMT line
coding and support aggregate rates of
up to 60 Mbps. The solution will be demonstrated at next month's Telecom
99 show in Geneva. http://www.alcatel.com/press/current/1999/09_07.htm

ACCELERATED
NETWORKS OBTAINS GR-303 CERTIFICATION FROM
SIEMENS, LUCENT AND NORTEL
Accelerated Networks, a
start-up developing voice and data over DSL access
systems, completed compliance testing of its GR-303 interfaces to Siemens'
EWSD Class 5 switch, Nortel's DMS 100 and DMS 500
switches, and Lucent's 5ESS AnyMedia switch. The Accelerated platform
combines the functionality of DSLAMs, subscriber management systems,
ATM concentrators and routers. At the customer premises, Accelerated
Networks offers an ATM-based "any-DSL" access device with
Ethernet, USB, and serial data interfaces. In March, Unisphere Solutions,
the new Siemens company, announced a $30 million equity investment
and OEM deal with Accelerated Networks. http://www.acceleratednetworks.com/

TOLLBRIDGE
ANNOUNCES MGCP PROTOCOL SUPPORT FOR ITS IP-BASED
DSL GATEWAYS
TollBridge Technologies will
support the emerging Media Gateway Controller
Protocol (MGCP) in its Local Exchange Gateway to provide connections to
the circuit-switched public switched telephone network
(PSTN) and to next generation IP voice switches. TollBridge also supports
the Bellcore standard GR-303 interface to a Class 5 switch.
Toll Bridge's DSL customer premise equipment converts voice samples from
multiple calls into a single IP packet and then prioritizes
voice and data. A TollBridge central office gateway translates packets
back into voice and provides the connection to a Class
5 switch. TollBridge is a start-up based in Sunnyvale, California. http://www.tollbridgetech.com/
