CISCO ENHANCES CATALYST 6000 WITH LOAD BALANCING, POLICY FEATURES
Cisco Systems announced a new Multilayer Switch Feature Card
(MSFC), Policy Feature Card (PFC) and OC-12 ATM uplink modules for its Catalyst 6000 switches. The Multilayer Switch Feature Card (MSFC) and the Policy Feature Card help to intelligently balance the load of user traffic across multiple TCP/IP application servers. The MSFC also provides transparent Web Cache redirection using Cisco's Web Cache Communication Protocol v2 (WCCP). The PFC supports packet classification, marking, scheduling, and congestion avoidance as well as hardware-based protocol filtering for use with IP telephony. The new ATM OC-12 dual-PHY uplink modules (starting at $21,995) provide LANE and MPOA services. http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/146/august99/30.html

SPRINT SIGNS $10 MILLION WIRELESS MODEM CONTRACT WITH HYBRID NETWORKS
Sprint has agreed to purchase $10 million in wireless modems from Hybrid Networks to be used in its forthcoming fixed wireless data network. Sprint has also agreed to purchase $11 million in convertible debentures in the San Jose, California-based company. Hybrid's wireless equipment is currently being used by People's Choice TV, American Telecasting Inc., Videotron USA and WBS America -- all of which Sprint has acquired or plans to acquire to support wireless access to Sprint ION. Hybrid's Wireless Broadband Data Access System transmits data downstream over MMDS, MDS, WCS, and UHF wireless frequencies. For the upstream link, Hybrid provides wireless, telephone, or leased-line return paths. Unlike the standard single 6 MHz channel architecture used by most wired cable modems, Hybrid's system uses three independent 10 Mbps 2 MHz modulators separate the downstream signal into 2 MHz subchannels, which adapt to 2, 4 or 6 MHz licensed bandwidths. http://www.sprint.com/Stemp/press/releases/9908/9908310853.html
