CORNING
DEMONSTRATES 10 GBPS OVER MULTIMODE FIBER
Corning and W.L. Gore & Associates announced error-free,
serial transmission of 10 Gbps traffic over 600
meters of multimode fiber using vertical-cavity,
surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) technology. The test
demonstrates that VCSELs and multimode fiber could
provide a physical transport solution for 10 Gbps local area networks. The
fiber used was Corning's 850 nm, optimized 50 micron InfiniCor multimode
fiber. Gore & Associates provided the
high-speed, 850 nm, vertical-cavity, surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). The
companies expect the combination of 50 micron multimode fiber and the
short-wavelength VCSELs will be economically viable
for 10 Gbps LANs. Corning's InfiniCor CL multimode
fiber is capable of transporting Gigabit Ethernet speeds up to 3,000
meters. In other news, Corning last week opened a
new fiber-producing plant in Concord, N.C. that will boost
its North American optical fiber-making capacity by about 50% when it
becomes fully-operational next year. http://www.corning.com/news/news_update1/index.html

ICANN
RECEIVES LOANS FROM MCI WORLDCOM AND CISCO SYSTEMS
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN),
which is the non-profit that oversees the Domain Names
System, received a $500,000 loan from MCI WorldCom and a $150,000 loan
from Cisco Systems. The emergency funding will allow ICANN to temporarily
meet its expenses until permanent funding is secured. http://www.icann.org/

STATE
COMM. RAISES FUNDING FOR NETWORK IN SOUTHEASTERN US
State Communications., a privately-held Integrated Communications
Provider (ICP) building a greenfield network in the
southeastern US, raised $52 million through a series B preferred stock
offering. Total paid in equity for the venture is now $70 million.
State Communications is building an 18 switch ATM-backbone covering 26
Southeastern metropolitan markets. The company is
deploying Nortel Networks Succession family of products
including DSM100/500, Passport, the 1-Meg Modem (DSL) product sets and
Redback's subscriber management system. The company
is planning to collocate Nortel's splitterless DSL equipment
in approximately 300 BellSouth central offices. http://www.statecom.com

TELSTRA
LAYS FIBER FOR SYDNEY 2000 OLYMPIC GAMES
With a little over one year to go to the Sydney 2000 Olympic and
Paralympic Games, Telstra said most of the basic
infrastructure for its Millenium Network is in place at Sydney Olympic
Park. A test will be held next month. Extensions are
currently being built to other Olympic venues. Over
4,800 km of new fiber will link into Telstra's national network and from
there to international satellites and undersea
cables. http://www.telstra.com.au/press/recent.html
