CABLE & WIRELESS SELECTS NORTEL NETWORKS AS SYSTEMS INTEGRATOR
Cable & Wireless named Nortel Networks as systems integrator and prime contractor for its US$1 billion network expansion. Nortel
Networks' will integrate other vendors' equipment under a "best in class" agreement. The first stage of the European expansion is
expected to be worth almost US$150 million. The entire deal is expected to be worth more than US$400 million to Nortel Networks

Cable & Wireless acquired MCI's Internet backbone in the US for $1.75 billion in July 1998. In March, Cable & Wireless
announced plan to extend its IP/ATM Internet backbone to Europe, Asia and Australia -- eventually reaching more than 80 countries
with its own fiber and data switches. In April, Cable & Wireless USA unveiled a $670 million investment to build 50
Super POPs across the US connected by OC-192 backbone. The upgrade includes announced the purchase of Juniper Networks'
M40 routers and FORE Systems' ASX 4000 ATM switches. In June, Ciena said Cable & Wireless USA had selected its MultiWave Metro
DWDM transport platform for more than 20 metropolitan areas across the US. In March, Newbridge Networks was selected to supply
its MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch and MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager for Cable & Wireless' global ATM network expansion.
ATG SELECTS LUCENT FOR NEW VOICE AND DATA NETWORK
Advanced TelCom Group Inc. (ATG), a start-up carrier based in Santa Rosa, California, signed a $100 million contract with
Lucent Technologies covering the deployment and maintenance of a new data and voice network serving mid-sized cities across the US.
The network architecture will feature Lucent's 5ESS Digital Switch functioning as a gateway for converting voice signals into packets
(using the 7R/E Packet Driver) for transport over an IP or ATM (or a combination of both) network. Lucent will also provide its
AnyMedia Access System, PortMaster 4 multiservice remote access concentrator and Caller Applications platform. Lucent's TrueWave RS
(reduced slope) Fiber will be used in ATG's network, but will be purchased and installed by contractors for ATG in each of its local
markets. ATG plans to offer voice and DSL-based services. Initial deployment will occur in 18 mid-sized cities in California,
Maryland, Nevada, Oregon, Virginia and Washington. ATG has previously disclosed a $63 million bandwidth purchase from Qwest
Communications. The company also has strategic alliances with Cerent, Diamond Lane/Nokia, and Advanced Fibre
Communications (AFC). ATG raised venture funding from Alta Communications, AT&T
Ventures, The Centennial Funds, Eagle Creek Capital, First Union Capital Partners, JP Morgan, Norwest Equity Partners, Norwest

SHARES IN NETRO SOAR IN IPO
Shares in Netro Corporation (Nasdaq:NTRO), a developer of broadband
wireless access systems, rose 193% in their first day of trading to close at 23 ½. The IPO had been priced at $8. Netro's AirStar
point-to-multipoint wireless access system can operate over a range of frequencies between 10 and 40 GHz. The platform provides
symmetrical connectivity with on-demand burst rates up to 8 Mbps. Netro's proprietary media access protocol, coupled with the
product's TDMA and ATM foundation, supports the transmission of voice, IP and Frame Relay traffic to small and mid-size businesses
in the metropolitan access market. The Netro AirStar platform is currently in trials or initial commercial deployment by 17 service
providers and enterprises worldwide. In April, Netro signed an OEM agreement with Lucent Technologies covering the point-to-multipoint
access system. Netro also has a non-exclusive system integration deal with Siemens/Italtel.

CAHNERS IN-STAT REPORTS ADSL AND CABLE MODEM MARKET SHARES
Alcatel continues to lead in ADSL modem shipments with 33% worldwide market share, followed by Cisco with an 18.7% share and
Orckit with a 13.7% share, according to Cahners In-Stat, a market research firm. Cahners In-Stat said worldwide ADSL modem
shipments grew 59% sequentially in Q2 99. ADSL modem shipments are now expected to reach one million units for all of 1999. In
comparison, worldwide cable modems shipments for 1999 are expected to reach 2.6 million units. However, Cahners In-Stat noted that
the grow rate for cable modem deployments had slowed to a 21% sequential increase for Q2 over Q1. Motorola and Nortel Networks
together accounted for 49% of cable modem shipments in Q2, followed by Com21 with an 11% market share. Cahners In-Stat's complete Q2

SBC COMMUNICATIONS TO OFFER EMAIL TEXT MESSAGING APPLIANCE
SBC Communications will be the first US telecom provider to offer an email-only info appliance not based on a personal computer.
SBC's eMessage appliance will be a small, lightweight keyboard with a flip-up display screen and a retail price under $180. The units
will be produced on an OEM basis by CIDCO, a manufacturer of CallerID displays. SBC will price the service at under $10 a
month. Introduction will begin next month in California from
Pacific Bell and in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas from Southwestern Bell.

URSUS TELECOM SIGNS FLEXIBLE $30 MILLION DEAL WITH GLOBAL CROSSING
Ursus Telecom, which operates IP switching facilities and POPs in Florida, Frankfurt, Lima, Buenos Aires, Johannesburg and Tokyo,
signed a $30 million capacity agreement with Global Crossing. The deal gives Ursus the flexibility to deploy the capacity from any
point to any point in the Global Crossing network, rather than on a specific ocean cable.

LUCENT UNIFIES ITS ATM ACCESS PORTFOLIO
Lucent Technologies will combine its AC series of ATM access concentrators with the SA series of ATM access products obtained
through Ascend into a PacketStar Access Concentrator family. The product line-up includes:
* the PSAX 20 and PSAX 50 (formerly the AC 20 and the SA 50) for the small customer premise equipment/customer located equipment
(CPE/CLE) market
* the PSAX 100 and PSAX 600 (formerly the SA 100 and SA 600) for
the large CPE/CLE multi-tenant market, and
* the PSAX 1200, PSAX 1250 and PSAX 2300 (formerly the SA 1200, AC
120 and AC 230 respectively) for the carrier central office market.
Following the acquisition of Ascend, Lucent claims a 42% share of the ATM access equipment market based on figures from a recent
International Data Corporation (IDC) report.

US ARMY UPGRADES ITS EUROPEAN VOICE NET WITH SIEMENS' EWSD SWITCHES
The US Army will upgrade its Defense Information Systems Network Europe
(DISN-E) from its the present digital, but non-ISDN capable telecommunications network, to an ISDN capable network using over
120 digital EWSD switches from the Siemens Information and

NOVELL REPORTS REVENUE OF $327 MILLION, GROWING DIRECTORY-ENABLED SALES
Novell reported quarterly revenue of $327 million, up 20% over the
same period last year. Net income was $49 million, or $0.14 per share. Revenue from directory-enabled NetWare server software
totaled $175 million in the third quarter, up 27% over Q3 98 on very strong gains in IP-based NetWare 5. Directory-enabled
applications grew 34% to $75 million, led by ZENworks, an identity-based remote desktop management application. Growth in revenue
from site-licenses for large network directory deployments was up 42% year-over-year to $192 million.

CIENA REPORTS REVENUE OF $128.8 MILLION, UP 15% SEQUENTIALLY
Ciena reported quarterly revenue of $128.8 million, up 15.5% over the previous quarter's revenue. Last year, the company reported
$129.1 million in revenue for the corresponding quarter. Net income was $1.5 million, or $0.01 per diluted share, excluding
merger related costs for the acquisition of Omnia Communications. Ciena had 18 optical transport customers, including recently
announced customers Alltel, Intermedia, and RCN, for the quarter, compared to 10 customers in the same quarter last year. Ciena's
