CISCO
TO ACQUIRE CALISTA INC. FOR PBX-OVER-IP SYSTEMS
Cisco Systems will acquire privately held Calista Inc., a
developer of Internet phone systems, for about $55
million in stock. Calista's PBX-over-IP
products extend any supported PBX telephone to a
remote location such as a home or branch office by using an IP connection.
The technology works at the network layer by emulating the
closed PBX architecture of different digital phone manufacturers. Calista
currently supports various PBX models from Lucent, Nortel, Mitel, Siemens
and Ericsson. Cisco said the acquisition would allow
it to mix and match Internet-based phones with legacy digital phones
inside large companies. Calista was founded by former employees of Madge
Networks. The company is based in Bucks, England and
San Jose, California. http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/146/august99/15.html

TACHION
NETWORKS UNVEILS COLLAPSED CENTRAL OFFICE PLATFORM
Tachion Networks, a start-up based in Eatontown, New Jersey,
announced a collapsed central office platform designed to
integrate IP routing, Frame Relay, ATM and TDM switching, SS7/C7 signaling
and SONET transport. A dual TDM/ATM switching matrix allows services to be
switched in native format. The integration of SONET ATM/STM
Add Drop Mux (ADM) enables direct attachment to SONET rings. The platform
also uncouples service profiles from physical line-
and trunk-interfaces. ATM, Frame Relay, IP, TDM, and
voice service software is selectable on a port-by-port basis.
Tachion said its FUSION 5000 platform enables incumbent carriers to
migrate from circuit to packet-based networks. It could also be used by
emerging service providers to deliver bundled voice and data
services without deploying multiple overlay networks. MCI WorldCom and
Comcast Cable are currently evaluating the Tachion platform http://www.tachion.com/

C-PORT
ANNOUNCES ITS DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS PROCESSOR
C-Port Corporation, a start-up based in North Andover, Mass.,
introduced its Digital Communications Processor (DCP), an
all-purpose communications chip offering extensive programmability and
wire speed processing. C-Port programmable single chip C-5 DCP system
is capable of functioning in high-function Ethernet switches,
multiservice access platforms, terabit routers, and optical edge switches.
The processor supports any network protocol or mix
of network protocols (IP, Ethernet, ATM, Frame Relay, SONET) over
physical interfaces ranging from DS1 to OC-48 at full wire speed. The C-5
DCP offers over 3,000 MIPS of processing power and 5 Gbps of aggregate
bandwidth. Multiple devices can be stacked in order to scale equipment
designs to the terabit level. Each C-5 DCP contains
16 building blocks, called Channel Processors, that include a dedicated,
programmable RISC core, plus two programmable serial data processors for
handling low-level communications tasks such as
packet and cell parsing, validation, framing, and encoding/decoding.
In addition, each C-5 DCP also includes five optimized
coprocessors that accelerate specialized networking tasks -- traffic
classification, queue management, payload handling, fabric
interfacing and supervisory processing - that are common across
all applications. Sampling will start next month. C-Port received venture
funding from Charles River Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, Benchmark
Capital and Amerindo Investment Advisors. http://www.cportcorp.com/

TELECHOICE
ESTIMATES DSL DEPLOYMENTS IN US NOW AT 159K
TeleChoice, a telecommunications management consultancy tracking
the DSL market, estimates the number of DSL lines in
service in the US grew to 159,150 by the end of the
second quarter 1999, more than tripling since fourth quarter 1998 and more
than doubling since first quarter 1999. The company
believes the growth rate for DSL is now
significantly higher than for cable modems, although the number of
deployed cable modems has already reached the 1 million mark. TeleChoice
said that of the 22,000 COs in the US, 3,742 are now
deployed with DSL equipment, paving the way for much faster growth
in DSL lines installed. http://www.telechoice.com

ARROWPOINT
CLAIMS 400% CACHE PERFORMANCE BOOST FOR ITS WEB SWITCHES
ArrowPoint Communications, a start-up based in Westford, Mass,
said its new "content-aware" Web switches
deliver a 400% cache performance advantage over Layer 4 switching and
router-based solutions. Renaissance Worldwide conducted the test
benchmark. ArrowPoint's Web switches look deep into the hypertext transfer
protocol (HTTP) request headers all the way down to the URL
and cookies with strings of more than 256 bytes to determine what content
is being requested. ArrowPoint's Web switches then bypass caches for
non-cacheable content, such as Common Gateway Interface (CGI),
Active Server Pages (ASP), or database queries, and transmit these
non-cacheable requests directly to the origin server. This improves Web
response times by eliminating the latency caused when caches must forward
requests for non-cacheable content to the Internet.
ArrowPoint was founded by Cheng Wu, who previously co-founded Arris
Networks (acquired by Cascade). Road Runner, the cable modem joint venture
of Time Warner, MediaOne, Microsoft, Compaq and Advance/Newhouse, has
installed ArrowPoint's Content Smart Web switches in
its 21 data centers nationwide. http://www.arrowpoint.com
