SBC to Deploy Cisco's 12000 Series Routers in National OC-192 IP/MPLS Network
SBC Communications has selected Cisco Systems' 12000 Series router for deployment in its new national 10 Gbps OC-192 backbone network. SBC will use the network to transport existing Internet-based services, such as Dedicated Internet Access and SBC-Yahoo! DSL and dial-up, as well as new IP capabilities to be developed for SBC's business customers. SBC will utilize MPLS-based traffic engineering on the new network.

  • Last month, SBC Communications announced its national data transport strategy for delivering Frame Relay, ATM and Private Line services to business customers across the US. SBC's new standardized national data services will be introduced as the company gains regulatory approvals to enter specific markets. The company said that it anticipated completion of the national expansion phase of its data and IP network backbones by mid-2003, including a fully redundant OC-192 IP platform. SBC plans to serve customers in 50 of the nation's largest cities with a full range of data and IP services.

ITU Assists Afghanistan in Rebuilding Telecom Infrastructure from Scratch
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) will provide emergency support to the government of Afghanistan in its efforts to restore its heavily damaged telecommunication and broadcasting infrastructure. Specifically, in anticipation of large-scale deployment of wireless communication services, the ITU will help develop a national frequency plan, install a spectrum management system and put in place coherent licensing and assignment procedures. The project is currently being funded by proceeds from the ITU's telecom exhibitions. The ITU is encouraging others to assist in the effort.

Laurel Networks Announces Edge Router Service Restoration Features
Laurel Networks announced network availability features that improve Layer 2 and IP service restoration on its ST200 Service Edge Router, which supports ATM, Frame Relay, IP, and IP/MPLS. Upon detection of a link or adjacent node failure, the ST200 will:

  • Switch over 50,000 Layer 2 connections per second. This is achieved through fast failover hardware programming, configurable SONET timers, MPLS-based techniques and RSVP hot standby and fast reroute. Laurel contrasts its architecture with ATM switches that must reestablish a large number of individual circuits in the event of a failure.
  • Perform IP service restoration in under 50 milliseconds regardless of the number of destination prefixes by using techniques to update IP forwarding table entries.
  • Restore traffic destined to over 500 IP VPN sites in under 50 milliseconds.

  • In June, Laurel announced that Level 3 Communications would deploy its ST200 Service Edge Router in the US and Europe to provide MPLS-based Ethernet private line, ATM and Frame Relay service.
  • The ST200 Service Edge Router is based on a distributed design, redundant, hot-swappable components and modular, in-house developed software. Each ST200 line card can simultaneously support any protocol, including Frame Relay, ATM, POS, PPP or TDM. The platform supports OC-48/STM-16 SONET/SDH, OC-12/STM-4 SONET/SDH, Gigabit Ethernet and T1/E1 interfaces.
