Navajo Tribal Utility Plans LTE Trial
Bookmark and Share

The Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA) is planning an LTE trial using 700 MHz spectrum to bring broadband services to population centers throughout the 27,000 square miles of the Navajo nation.

NTUA is pursuing funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) for a $46M grant that includes a 530 mile of fiber optic deployment and a 57-site LTE deployment.

NTUA has selected ZTE to supply LTE equipment and DragonWave to supply wireless backhaul systems.

To support NTUA’s application, DragonWave is installing a commercial pilot network near Fort Defiance, Arizona, in which the Horizon Quantum is backhauling 700 MHZ LTE base stations.

Utah Pursues Google High Speed Fiber Network Partnership Bid

Utah Governor Gary Herbert endorsed local efforts to encourage Google to bring its experiment in fiber optics to the state.

UTOPIA, which is a group of 16 Utah cities, operates a municipal fiber optic network using an open service provider model.

"UTOPIA is a good candidate to partner with Google in the new project and to bring the experiment to well-prepped ground,” said the Governor in a letter of support. "UTOPIA has successfully pursued models of deployment and found a sustainable and reliable model," he said.

Google announced last month that it wants to partner with municipalities to develop and experiment with an ultrafast fiber network that would reach 50,000 to 500,000 people across the country.

South Korea Leads in FTTH/B Penetration
Bookmark and Share

South Korea is the first country in the world where more than 50% of households are using FTTH/B connections, according to new figures from the FTTH Council. The top five global economies in terms of the total number of subscribers are Japan, China, South Korea, USA and Taiwan. These five countries represent more than 90% of all FTTH/B subscribers in the Global Ranking.

The latest update to the FTTH/B Global Ranking, jointly issued by the three FTTH Councils of Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America, was presented at last week's FTTH Conference in Lisbon.

"We welcome the latest update of the Global Ranking with mixed feelings", commented Karel Helsen, President of the FTTH Council Europe. "On one hand, we are happy to see European newcomers like Portugal, Bulgaria and Czech Republic in the Ranking, and of course France, one of the European G-20 states. On the other hand, the new G-20 Ranking shows that countries such as Germany and UK, and of course the European Union as a whole are still lagging behind. Although too slow, Europe is heading in the right direction and the FTTH Council Europe will pursue its efforts to accelerate FTTH deployment in Europe."
