South Korea Launches New Broadband Initiative
South Korea's Ministry of Information and Communication announced a new plan to deliver Internet connections of at least 1 Mbps and preferably 20 Mbps to every household by 2005. South Korea already has over 10 million broadband Internet connections giving it the highest penetration rate of such services. Over the three-year plan, the government will encourage KT, Hanaro and other ISPs to invest 13.3 trillion won (US$10.9 billion) in their broadband networks. The government will provide loans to cover some of that investment.
